"It turned into more of a soap opera"
No. I stopped at the second book in the series and wish I hadn't invested the time in the first place. A coming of age became a soap opera and just didn't hold my interest. The reading performance was superb, but couldn't fix the fact that I was in the wrong genre.
"Meh"
The book stretched the willful suspension of disbelief beyond the bounds set within the parameters of the book. I also disliked the unnecessary profanity that didn't advance the plot or help to understand the characters. When a writer's expressive capacity is limited to monosylabic junior high language it says something either about the quality of the writer or about the writer's estimation of just how low the readers' vocabulary capacity is.
"Great book. Worst narrator imaginable"
Anyone. Anyone at all. Even Kevin Costner could have done better accents. This narrator has a great voice, but his accents are just awful. Sometimes his awful southern accent merges with his equally laughable British accent. The result is unholy. Please, please, please Audible, re-record.
Cringed.
Great book, but the delivery was just overpowering. Like Listening to Roseanne Barr's national anthem.
"Meh"
I have tried a couple of her other books and did not enjoy them. The price on this one was free, and so I bit.
No
She wasn't bad as a reader.
I'm sure this narrative has its place, just like the movies in the bargain basement bin at Wal-mart, but I got the feeling that Audible agreed to publish this before they heard it, hence the free download.
"Lacked finesse"
I love Baldacci's works and thoroughly enjoyed his other non-traditional book--Wish You Well. But this was a ham handed attempt to play the violin. His inspiration was right--it was a story that had great potential, but the execution was clumsy.
"Audio quit 40 minutes into the book"
The book went silent 40 minutes into the recording. What a disapppointment for our road trip.
"The recording issues must have been fixed"
Card delivers again. I felt so thoroughly warned by the other reviewers who mentioned that the recording was terrible and apparently unedited, that I almost didn't order the book. I heard none of the coughing, errors, repetitions or personal comments that any of the other reviewers mentioned. Perhaps Audible has since edited this work. On to the book. I think what I like most about Card's work is what he teaches me about human nature, my own nature. I always walk away feeling a little better capable of understanding myself and others through his contemplative observations of his characters. Well done. Please keep them coming.
"Outstanding!"
Card is a gifted story-teller who delivered a wonderful book yet again. What I find about most of his books which was the case here as well is that I walk away from his books with questions to ponder and new insights about humanity. Well done, Card.
