"Average at best"
Excellent performance from Marc Thompson. Loved some of plot lines of this book and fast forwarded through other sections.
Likes :
- Abaloth visits Lost Tribe's Home world was excellent but way too short. Author missed a great opportunity here.
- Epic Space battle involving Dalah and Jag.
- Gavar Khai , Vol and other Lords are always good.
- Nasty interrogation robot
Dislikes:
- Is Vestara good or bad? Enough already! Send Ben and Vestara to summer camp for duration of the series.
- Jedi running around looking for ship should be edited out as it did nothing for the plot. Jedi could have been on vacation for all that matters and would not have affected out come.
- No battle strategy/tactics used by Jedi or Sith for that matter. Run into battle and then run away.
- Author's grossly underused Khai and Grand Lord Vol..two of my favorite characters.
"An essential read for lore enthusiasts"
Well written, organized and presented. This book provides and excellent overview of the 'Rule of Two' and why, in Bane's opinion, it was a necessary 'adjustment' to the current 'brotherhood of darkness' model. Bane's character is developed nicely throughout the novel. I particularly enjoyed his 'rise to power' which was not a sudden affair and included some substantial setbacks/beatings. Also, one of the first SW offerings that I've read which showed specialization in certain aspects of the force and explains how a good 'blade master' can tactically take down someone who is stronger in the force.; also discussed the pre combat activation of a force shield and why it is necessary. Some great stuff on Revan history in here as well as quality material on the gritty Jedi General Hoth.
What I am disappointed in- which is not related to this novel- is the fact that Mr Karpyshyn failed to deliver a similar quality in his recent 'Revan' offering. Pity!
"Self indulgent."
I've read a number of Oliver's books and have enjoyed them all. This offering however had me reaching for the fast forward button on multiple occasions. There are chapters in this book where the author drones on and on about various minerals, alloys, compounds and chemical processes .... These section book simply confuses the reader and I found myself thinking 'why is Oliver telling me these things?'
There are sections in the book that I did enjoy such as the author's experiences during the war and excellent descriptions of his parents and household.
"Of superior quality! Worthy of Sci Fi prize"
Darth Plagueis is by far the best star wars title I've consumed to date{read 25 books including Thrawn Trilogy}. I'll be watching closely to see if James Luceno is nominated for a literary science fiction awards this year.
Finally a Star Wars book that is written for adults and hard core star wars fans! . Great pacing, plot, use of language and atmosphere. Once finished you will understand the Sith lineage all the way back to Darth Bane and beyond. This book is written in more of a classical style similar to the Count Of Monte Cristo. It's very interesting to see an entire offering from the view point of the dark side. Plagueis is well aware of the fact that Sith are being hunted by the Jedi and that he cannot afford to confront them. He does however indirectly use them to eliminate certain undesirables.
It took me an hour or so to get used to the narrator. I completely disagree with other commentator and I think Daneil Davis is a perfect fit for the novel {reader played DR Moriarty in the Star Trek Next Gen series}. Mark Thompson would not be a good fit to narrate as his cartoonish and campy style would have had a negative impact.
I've read many sci fi classics and am confident that this compares quite well. Would make a fantastic movie as long as Lucas is forbidden any sort of input.
"The author has failed Revan!"
Fairly good buildup but the ending was ridiculous which nearly resulted in me smashing my iphone against the wall. Revan is a fantastic character and should not spend the prime of his life sitting in prison cell after prison cell. My only hope is that the story line left potential for Revan to be re-re-born and then perhaps he may reach his full potential! I am not holding my breath as I am still recovering from the lame death of Mace Windu at the hands of the writers.
I consider KOTOR one of my all time favorite video games and feel let down by this novel.
"Better than expected"
The Sith and the supporting non jedi cast steal the show. The Sith agenda and in-fighting was very entertaining. Novel had good pacing with minimal story line jumps {unlike the Jedi Outcast series}
"Quite Enjoyable"
Excellent story with great characters. Was suprised by the level of violence so I would not recomend this for kids younger than twelve or so. Some of the voice actors in this audio book are exellent while others are more amateurish.
"Loved it and would have given it 4.5 if possible!"
I don't read fiction often but have to say I loved this book and loved the performance. My Stevenson has great skill as a writer and this title deserves it's reputation as one of the best adventure books ever written. The book is very well paced, has fantastic characters and great actions sequences.
This book really came alive as a result of Mr Britton's voice acting skills. In my opinion he is one of the best along with William Hootkins who narated Moby Dick
"Second part was not insightful"
Would give the first part of the book - the section where she described having the stroke and recovering from it - a four star rating. The second half of the book was new agey and simplistic [too much right hemisphere and not enough left!] and warrants only a 2 star rating.
As far as the audio portion goes the author read her own material and did an okay job at it.
My opinion of the book has nothing to do with my respect for the author. I greatly admire the author's will to survive and sheer determination; I give Jill a 5 star rating.
"Like pulling teeth"
The author portrays some of the characters as if they suffer from border line personality disorder. The constant posturing and antagonizing between Bail and Obi-Wan is hardly fitting for a senator and jedi. Kinda reminded me of a high school level ethics /philosophy class.
The narrator did a decent job of it and the production was good. I plan on investigating other Star Wars titles by different authors.
