I would listen to this twice, the story is solid, first you know where you are who the players are in this post WWI saga about magic woven into the early 20th century. The writer creates a good visualization of the magic as its being used and takes you into a phone call with a dead villian and our hero Nate Sullivan, since the story is so good to that point I just went along with it, the writer earned it. I also don't usually like high violence action for long, but his action was awesome, a lightning bolt fight with such intensity that it ends the dust bowl of the 1930's. Listen to this book it must be done. I listened to the 1st book before this one and I highly recommend it too. The dark story, lightens up just at the right times with characters that don't take themselves too seriously even in a serious situation. The ending sets up the next book in the series which I will be buying as soon as it appears.

I know I shouldn't like this gory series but I do. It reads like a TV mini-series and it's pretty gross, but I laughed at the humor and enjoyed it not trying to make it more than it was. So I may not recommend the series to everyone. I can't deny I liked it.

The Narrator has a deep rich voice and is very good.

I missed this read in high school. This was supposed to be a great American novel. Here's what I felt about it; Gatsby was boring. Poor Daisy I feel bad for her, she's married to a tedious cheating oaf, and having an affair with a bore. It would have been a better book if Daisy had pushed Tom overboard to his death on an Atlantic crossing to Europe. Because by then she was rid of Gatsby. Of course she would have lost the third person narration guy he was a bore too and she could join the circus and have a good time partying with Carneys. Maybe somebody could rewrite this as The Great Wolfman Gatsby.

Jake Gyllenhall is an excellent narrator.

Man this one really starts out strong and with promise; then it loses it's way, going from a strong premise of a new wicked genius serial killer to a low budget ghost buster meets the hot quiet hero from a romance novel, then it completely goes off the rails when the ending is so predictable and cheap it made me want to take the author back to the beginning and point at her story line then force her to tie up the loose ends! What starts as a great mystery thriller about catching a copy cat serial killer the ending could have been so much more, I was really sleepy when it finished. One thing though, this Narrator was great and I'll add him to my list voices I prefer to hear.

This story is of course a thriller; mystery; adventure. It moves along at a good speed, this story has a fair focus on the main character. I think sometimes I don't get involved in any of Lincoln Child's characters because they're Goobers. This one isn't bad. Of course Child is going to take a really cool thing and blow it up. (He does that in every book). I don't think that spoils the story since the tale is about people who are seduced by the "MacGuffin" if I may steal a thought from Hitchcock.

But you'll find the ending a little predictable and I think the main Character's sort of douche bags at times stumbling into the obvious traps. But still I was not bored at all and I do recommend it if you're like me and like an escape from how things really are.

The narrator has a good sounding voice, I ran it at 1.25 speed on my android phone app. I think you can kick it up to 1.5 if you download the unabridged version and need to pick up the pace a bit. Barret Whitner's articulation can handle any speed.

I love Jack Reacher books they are the best plots and this is the last of the series for me and I'm bummed out there aren't more. Jack is tough but uses his brains and the local waitress to get his solutions solved his way. There were a couple red herrings in this one. Misdirected warnings from his buddy the female Sargeant who without her assistance the case would never have been solved. A bit too much sex this time, the plot doesn't need it. I've learned so much about street fighting, artilery, handguns, brass knuckle fighting and why certain bones break easily. I'm going to miss the lessons. But still usually Lee Child doesn't throw in dead end clues, you usually get the clues thoughout the book straight and come to the conclusions with Jack. It's good to listen to at 1.5 speed. Dick Hill is slow and my least farvorite narrator.

This was the first Jack Reacher book I ever heard. I thought I was buying Preston/Child but made a mistake. By the time I figured out the difference between Lincoln Child and Lee Child I was through this one. There's a big difference; not that I will detail the obvious here. Then there's Dick Hill. This is not good either, Hill can't do women and he sounds like a drag queen, plus he can't really do a sexy Reacher because he has that upstate NY sound that seeps into his narration and Hill has sucking mouth sounds, completely creepy for long listens. I heartily suggest running the narration speed at 1.5 times and turn the volumn down as low as possible so you can't hear the dry mouth teeth sucking sounds under the narration. But anyway I got a deal on "The Killing Floor" and I too became a diehard Reacher fan. So I recommend Jack Reacher books, but this one must be a last resort; it's boring and Reacher is nasal thoughout most of it because of a broken nose.

I really like to exchange this. I just can't listen to really boring things about Mark Twain's real life whining.

First let me say that Marc Vietor, the narrator, is the Bourbon voice in this detective story that just rocks this book.

There's enough clues to figure out the crime here, but it is meat and potatoes crime. There are no freakishly sick criminals who devise gross ways to kill people or over the top bad guys who haunt your sleep. These are the sort of crimials who kill for sex and money and this over the hill gumshoe doggedly hunts them down. He's a lousy streetfighter and has a shelter dog who is brilliant at catching a frizbee. I like this detective and will continue through the entire series. I'm hooked.

I love to read this type of Detective story, the mystery is left in front of the reader and the drama is pulled in just enough so it's not annoying. Listening to this I must say Marc Vietor does my favorite cynical detective without sounding whiny and his narration of women doesn't make you visualize a man in drag. He's a top narrator and a mystery needs his voice. The story is simple but classic.

Nice length and great listen. I love Colbert's sharp misdirection humor. Well done.
