All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

Where does Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 5 so far.

What did you like best about this story?

    It's very personal

Have you listened to any of Amy Chua’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this is the first one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was a very touching story. Contrary to what I read about her, based on her op-ed, it was a normal story about a mother connecting with her children.

Everyone has struggles, some more cultural, generational, and environmental than others, but at the end of the day, it's a story about a mom.

Comparing Google to an ordinary business is like comparing a rocket to an Edsel. No academic analysis or bystanders account can capture it. Now Doug Edwards, Employee Number 59, offers the first inside view of Google, giving readers a chance to fully experience the bizarre mix of camaraderie and competition at this phenomenal company. I'm Feeling Lucky captures for the first time the unique, self-invented, yet profoundly important culture of the world's most transformative corporation.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, excellent story and voice, especially since the author himself is narrating the book.

What did you like best about this story?

That it's true, and the author was narrating.

What about Douglas Edwards’s performance did you like?

That the listener could tell when Edwards was passionate about the subject or the topic, and parts where he was less enthusiastic or even disappointed (with the real-life result). It felt more like he was talking to me, rather than an audiobook.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh at moments. The story was very humanizing, one can tell when the author was happy, slighted, angry, and/or disappointed.

    Any additional comments?

Great for anyone who is interested in the tech world.

First, businesses discovered quality as a key competitive edge; next came science. Now, Donald A. Norman, former Director of the Institute for Cognitive Science at the University of California, reveals how smart design is the new frontier. The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how - and why - some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Would you listen to The Design of Everyday Things again? Why?

Potentially. It would be a great reference book to remind myself of good design principles.

What did you like best about this story?

The history behind of the important design decisions that we use in our lives (e.g. keyboard), as well as the concepts that will continue to hold over time.

What three words best describe Peter Berkrot’s voice?

    Solid, plain, clear.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Only relevant for certain people, but at the same time for those who understand these concepts already might not learn anything new.

  • Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World

    (272)

In today’s society, games are fulfilling real human needs in ways that reality is not. Hundreds of millions of people globally - 174 million in the United States alone - regularly inhabit game worlds because they provide the rewards, stimulating challenges and epic victories that are so often lacking in the real world. Jane McGonigal argues that we need to figure out how to make the real world—our homes, our businesses and our communities—engage us in the way that games do.

Yes. It has some great information, statistics, and numbers on the effect of video games. Very informative.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No particular character in this book.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

Very clear. So much so, that I could listen to this in 3x narration speed and understand everything.

If you could give Reality Is Broken a new subtitle, what would it be?

The positive effect of games on our society.

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told....

    Tina Fey

Was there a moment in the book that particular moved you?

Moved? Not in particular, but the SNL clip definitely stood out to me.
