In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson. Soon Atropos is part of the Mediterranean Fleet's harassment of Napoleon, recovering treasure that lies deep in Turkish waters

Would you listen to Hornblower and the "Atropos" again? Why?

No, I won't listen again. Not for a long time. And why not, because there are more where that came from.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hornblower and the "Atropos"?

Hornblower threatening the life of the annoying doctor if he doesn't save the annoying salvage guy.

If you could take any character from Hornblower and the "Atropos" out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Probably the annoying salvage guy. I have a weak spot for experts with stories to tell, annoying or not.

  • Peter the Great: His Life and World

    • UNABRIDGED (43 hrs and 37 mins)

    Story
    (237)

This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

If you could sum up Peter the Great in three words, what would they be?

a good tour of a great man, great in the sense of large, powerful, world-changing, not in the spiritual sense!

What did you like best about this story?

The view of Russia at that point in time, and getting to know Peter's arch-nemesis Charles the 5th of Sweden. We need a good English-language bio of him, now!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

We Will Be Modern (and have ships)

  • Washington: A Life

    • UNABRIDGED (41 hrs and 57 mins)

    • Narrated By Scott Brick

    Story
    (1019)

In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

ButterLegume says: "A sad day when my book was done!"
    "True grit."

Would you listen to Washington: A Life again? Why?

I don't know. I'm not sure I want to listen again. I knew going in how awful the early years of the American Revolution would be. Do I want to listen again to the story of Valley Forge?

What other book might you compare Washington: A Life to and why?

Obvious comparison is the bio of Alexander Hamilton. Same time, allies, etc. Also, very well written, both books.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    American politics aren't getting worse....

    Any additional comments?

Good perspective that George Washington, though a demi-god in his own time, made significant mistakes and had severe critics, and enemies.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

    Peter says: "Brilliant, insightful, intriguing."

Would you listen to Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World again? Why?

Yes, I probably will listen again. I like to hear the other side of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

Information about Mongol culture, as opposed to the stories told about them in European and Chinese history.

What does Jonathan Davis and Jack Weatherford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Well, it's well done. And I can knit while I listen. : )

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Could have, but it is very long.
