It is 1968. Lynnie, a young white woman with a developmental disability, and Homan, an African American deaf man, are locked away in an institution: the School for the Incurable and Feebleminded, and have been left to languish, forgotten. Deeply in love, they escape, and find refuge in the farmhouse of Martha, a retired schoolteacher and widow. But the couple is not alone - Lynnie has just given birth to a baby girl. When the authorities catch up to them that same night, Homan escapes into the darkness, and Lynnie is caught.

I couldn't listen to this book fast enough. While I feel like it was a bit rushed toward the end with trying to tie up loose ends and put things together nicely, I thought the story was great and made me think, long after I was done listening.

I didn't like the narration of this book and there were several times when the audio went funky and it sounded like it was under water. My other books played fine and I don't know if anyone else had that problem but it didn't help. The story was kind of slow and meandered.

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

I found the plot over the top (everything just happens to work out in Owen's favor- every time!) and had a hard time relating to it. I understand that it's a book about faith and the unbelievable but it seemed to be shoved in your face.
The actual performance itself bugged me so much I almost stopped listening after the first hour. I HATED the narrator's voice used for Owen. I get that his voice was supposed to be unusual and obnoxious but this was too much! I probably should have read the book so I could have just imagined what the voice sounded like rather than listed to it for so many hours.
