I have read everything Card has written, this book is pure formula. I hope it isn't a warning bell of things to come. The performance was great, the book was not.
Probably - because he has written well in the past and I hope he will again.
I enjoyed the books beginning - the first two chapters drew you in. After that, it became predictable.
Considering this was 5 hours plus, I thought they would be fleshing the story out more - they did a bit, but much of the extra time was intro and exit from a 30 minute radio broadcast from which this was taken - very irritating. Star Wars, as it turns out, is pretty dull without the visual special effects. I made it about half way through before turning it off.
I almost returned this after the beginning, which is absolutely awful. The six year old Ender is read by an adolescent with a deepish voice - horrible casting. It's not that the young man doesn't do a good job of reading, but his age was too advanced. His voice was to deep for the entire play, but worst at first both because of the shock that they would do that after the complete disaster of a movie where Ender was 16 from beginning to end and Bonzo was a midget.
I honestly was about to turn it off and decided to listen a bit more to see if I could ignore the actor obviously being far too old for the role. I managed, although it was still irritating for a while. Everything else is wonderful however although several of the children have obviously gone through, or are going through puberty.
The story is well written and deviations from the original are all sensible and in some cases better than the original.
I will not spoil anything other than to say that this stands up well by itself, and I did care about the characters - something the movie completely failed to do.
The story is brilliant.
Sounds wooden. Doesn't really sound like he understands what he's reading in many spots. It is very much like he didn't read the book first and just sight read the whole thing using the notes of someone else. Voices are all very similar, accents fake.
Couldn't finish it - had to turn it off because of poor narration. I've read the book and loved it - that made this very disappointing.
This should be taken off the sales list. I couldn't even get past the first few minutes of the nonsense sound effects.
Turning it off.
Not even if I was paid thousands of dollars, given great drugs, and beautiful women.
There's a few minutes I'll never get back.
Don't waste your two bucks.
No - the performance is the worst possible. This needs to be redone by a female. The main character is female and this reader makes all female voices sound like gay football players. Very distracting and difficult to get past. You will find yourself laughing and shaking your head at the reader during serious moments because the voices are so ridiculous.
This book has few comparisons. I can see it's influence in many sci-fi books that were written after, but nothing that came before.
The female voices were horrible, and many of the male voices were over the top. Since the main characters are female, and there is quite a bit of dialog, this makes for an uncomfortable listening experience. It takes quite a while to ignore the reader.
