In a future uncomfortably close to the present day, the apocalypse has surpassed all expectations. Hideous demons roam the streets in an orgy of terror, drawing pleasure from torturing humans as sadistically as possible. Ira, a young San Francisco artist, becomes involved with a strange group of scientists and philosophers desperately trying to end the bloody siege. But the most shocking revelation is yet to come.

Laurie says: "Tedious and not what I expected"
    "Just not very good."

I was kind of hoping that this book would be a bit of dark fluffy fun, but it was just way too trite for me to get into. I mean c'mon people, this story deserves a made for tv movie on the sci-fi channel.

  • The Big Sleep

Raymond Chandler's first novel, published in 1939, introduces the now-immortal Philip Marlowe, archetypal hard boiled detective and weary knight of the seamy side of the City of Angels in the 1930s. Already with cynicism, Marlowe takes on an assignment from the Sternwood family: the child-woman Carmen, the sultry Frances, and the ancient General too far past his prime to cope with his daughter's brand of trouble.

    Mark says: "Gould is Marlowe"
    "Great book, lacking narration."
    Overall

The Big Sleep is a wonderful book and I was ecstatic to see it avaiable on audio, but I was sorely disappointed with the narration here and was sadly unable to listen to more than the first couple of chapters. Perhaps this is due to my familiarity with the Phillip Marlowe radio-dramas of the 1940's, but none of the character's wit and sparkle are captured in audio form here despite the careful craft of the writing itself. So, sadly, I cannot reccomend this audio book- it is surely better to wait for a superior version.

  • The Areas of My Expertise

In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Although best sellers such as Poor Richard's Almanack and The Book of Lists were certainly valuable, they also were largely true.

    Margot says: "Wow!"
    "Simply Amazing."

All I can say is that I found this book deeply deeply amusing. So much so that I've actually listened to it twice (I rarely do that). It really strikes the perfect balance between intelligence and silliness, which I immensely appreciate.
