I was kind of hoping that this book would be a bit of dark fluffy fun, but it was just way too trite for me to get into. I mean c'mon people, this story deserves a made for tv movie on the sci-fi channel.
The Big Sleep is a wonderful book and I was ecstatic to see it avaiable on audio, but I was sorely disappointed with the narration here and was sadly unable to listen to more than the first couple of chapters. Perhaps this is due to my familiarity with the Phillip Marlowe radio-dramas of the 1940's, but none of the character's wit and sparkle are captured in audio form here despite the careful craft of the writing itself. So, sadly, I cannot reccomend this audio book- it is surely better to wait for a superior version.
All I can say is that I found this book deeply deeply amusing. So much so that I've actually listened to it twice (I rarely do that). It really strikes the perfect balance between intelligence and silliness, which I immensely appreciate.
