  • The Modern Scholar: The Anglo-Saxon World

Had the Angles and Saxons not purposefully migrated to the isles of the Britons and brought with them their already-well-developed use of language, Angelina Jolie may never have appeared in the movie Beowulf. Professor Michael D.C. Drout is at his best when lecturing on the fascinating history, language, and societal adaptations of the Anglo-Saxons.

"Wow- it's a lecture series and it's good!"
    Overall

I bought this for my wife, I'm not much into language studies, at least I didn't think I was until I listened to it. This is not like the pod casts of university lectures I've tried. This is good AND interesting, the Prof is engaging and energetic. He has a good speaking voice and the recording is great. I still can't believe that I've gone back and listened to it again to make sure I understand all his points.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Want to join the “superhumans”? Luckily you don’t have to run to catch up with them, thanks to McDougall’s and Sanders’ inspiring (and motivating) journey through history, science, physiology, health, entertaining characters and unlikely friendships. Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure.

I've lost track of how many times I've listened to this book. I use it to motivate me to get off the couch, I fall asleep to it at night. It helps me eat healthier, but I still haven't found any Pinole where I live. Maybe some day it will even help me to run a marathon....or beat a horse in a hundred mile race...well alright it might not be that good. I don't think it's normal to listen to it as many times as I have but it's a crazy good read.

Published in 1853, Bleak House is one of Dickens' most mature and ambitious novels. From London's slums to the Court of Chancery, where the endless case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce devours the future of several generations, the author's canvas of Victorian society vividly conveys an indictment of legal corruption, a riveting tale of detection, and a compelling emotional drama.

    Story

It's Dickens! The story is a classic. Have a test listen to the narrator first, you're either going to love his accent and attitude or he's going to drive you around the bend. I personally love his dry droll bored upper class condescending narration. I don't think everyone else will though.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Now I know why this is a classic tale. The story is so powerful and raw. Donald Sutherland's voice is interesting, not as polished as some other readers but I think it doesn't detract from the story. You find yourself imagining the Old Man and not thinking about the reader.

When Hercule Poirot receives a letter from Miss Emily Arundell, an elderly woman concerned about her recent accident, his suspicions are aroused by the date on the letter-some two months earlier. A visit to Miss Arundell's estate reveals that the wealthy mistress has been dead for some time, leaving behind a bitterly contested will and a pack of greedy heirs with motives for murder.

The narrator for this story is amazing, he does a great job of all the different accents. Very easy to listen to, great sound quality. The story is engrossing too, I've always just watched Agatha Christie movies, the book is so much better.
