Prunella Scales is super but the book certainly isn't for everyone. No story line. No action. Rambling. Tedious. Save your credit/money.

Here is the remarkable story of how this humble language took vigorous root in Eastern European shtetls and in the Jewish quarters of cities across Europe; how it achieved a rich literary flowering between the wars in Europe and America; how it was rejected by emancipated Jews; and how it fell victim to the Holocaust. And also how, in yet another twist of destiny, Yiddish today is becoming the darling of academia. Yiddish is a history as story; a tale of flesh-and-blood people with manic humor.

A nice Jewish history book written with information about Yiddish as the common thread. Well worth the listen.

    J. P. Beaumont is finally taking some time off to have knee-replacement surgery. But instead of taking his mind off work, the operation plunges him into one of the most perplexing and mind-blowing mysteries he's ever faced. A series of dreams takes him back to his early days on the force with the Seattle PD. When tugging on those threads from long ago leads to present-day murders, Beau's suspicions are confirmed. Some bodies from the second watch just won't stay buried.

First part of the story is forced. Trying too hard to create a plot. Characters quite nice though. Mystery turns out interesting. J.A. Jance: keep trying!

What would have made A Time to Dance better?

    A ghost writer.

What was most disappointing about Melvyn Bragg’s story?

It starts out as soft porn. I could only assume that it continues along the same lines. Why bother...unless you're looking for this kind of stuff.

What didn’t you like about James Faulkner’s performance?

Arrogant, ponderous. What's there to like?

Throughout his years with the LAPD, Peter Decker has handled a number of tough cases and strange killers. But few of his previous assignments compare to his latest case. When Hobart Penny is found dead in his apartment, the cops think that his pet cat - an adult female tiger - attacked the reclusive elderly billionaire. But it soon becomes clear that the beast that killed the eccentric inventor is all too human.

There's always been a certain charm to Faye Kellerman's books: family relationships, interesting mysteries, good characters. She really misses on this book. It feels as if she's run out of stories so goes for the gross to keep her readers. Result? A rather disgusting disaster. Save your credits!

All of the Trollopes on Audible are engaging. But what a sad choice of a narrator for this one. Totally ruins the story. Too much of an effort to suffer through her reading. Sorry: no more Flo Gibson. Do listen to the sample to see if you can stand it before you buy!

Her books are great: excellent plots, lots of drama, fine endings. And, best of all, wonderful, believable characters. This is the first time she's done something that ruins a good book: graphic, embarrassing, unnecessary, voyeuristic sexual activity. And she chooses to describe intimate behaviors between a girl of fourteen and boy of fifteen. These teens are decent, intelligent, and talented. Why intrude on their private lives? Teen romance should be better left to the imagination.

  • Willful Behavior: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery

Mystery lovers everywhere are addicted to Donna Leon's ever-honorable Commissario Guido Brunetti and her portrayal of Venice's beautiful but sinister byways and canals. In Willful Behavior, Brunetti is approached for a favor by one of his wife's students. Intelligent and serious, Claudia Leonardo asks for his help in obtaining a pardon for a crime once committed by her now-dead grandfather.

    Story

As always, the Donna Leon stories are well-crafted with rich characters (except the annoying know-it-all Paola). Crossley's narration is the best. He reads in a lively manner, moves the story along. He's got an elegant English accent and leaves off the fake, ponderous imitation Italian. Too bad he hasn't narrated more of the Leon books.

  • Death of a Kingfisher: Hamish Macbeth, Book 27

PC Hamish Macbeth can't help but admire the resourcefulness of the Highlanders during the recession - in tough times they have to lure tourists to their sleepy towns and the quaint village of Braikie has come up with a novel solution. It really doesn't have that much to offer apart from a place of rare beauty called Buchan's Wood, which the clued-up local tourist board director has rechristened "The Fairy Glen" and has had brochures printed with a beautiful kingfisher rising from a lake on the cover. It isn't long before coach tours begin to arrive but just as the town's luck starts to turn....

The story was soooo unbelievable with a plot that was a total stretch. Hamish is a fairly good character but he's placed in such unbelievable situations that you just want him to go away. The reader was fine but that's not enough to compensate for this silly story.

Charlotte Pitt’s mother, Caroline, travels with her young husband, Joshua Fielding, and his theatrical troupe to Whitby, where Dracula first touched English soil. Joshua has arranged to produce a stage adaptation of Dracula by the daughter of Whitby millionaire Charles Netheridge, but the amateurish script produces a disastrous first read-through. As tempers flare and wind and snow swirl around Netheridge’s lonely hilltop mansion, a black-cloaked stranger emerges from the storm - an eerily opportune arrival, for this enigmatic figure, one Anton Ballin, turns out to be a theatrical genius.

Usually am delighted by Anne Perry's books. This one falls flat. The story is contrived, rather dull. Couldn't make it through more than half way in spite of the fine narration. Will certainly listen to more of hers but would skip this one.
