"good story but painful narration"
Found the story to be one of the better ones of the series, but the narration was painful - the upward inflection at the end of every sentence (especially in the second half of the book) grew ever more of a distraction!
"wonderful story!"
I throughly enjoyed this story. Very convincing picture of a developing romance against the backdrop of war and a bomber station, especially given that the war was still ongoing at the timing of this book's publication. Although most of the book was quite slow paced, there were definitely some exciting periods towards the end. I greatly enjoyed what appears to be a personal appearance of the author in his own book! Excellent narration, well suited to Shute's quiet, understated style. I'm so glad that another of my "top 5" Shute favourites has been added to Audible!
"Georgette Heyer at her best!"
This has always been my favorite of all of Heyer's books, and when I finally had a chance to revist the book in audio, it was just as wonderful a book as I remembered. Kids, misbehaving dog, longsuffering & reluctant guardian, pork jelly, not to mention excellent narration, make this a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
"My favorite Dick Francis!"
This is probably my favorite of the Dick Francis books, and the narration for this audio version simply added to the enjoyment!
"this is Dick Francis at his best!"
The excellent narration added to a thoroughly enjoyable story. I suspect that I will be listening to this one again!
"a thoroughly enjoyable listen!"
Tony Britton is a superb narrator, and greatly enhanced what this enjoyable story! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
"enjoyable story"
An enjoyable start to the series and worth the listen, despite slow and laboured narration.
"great story!"
I discovered Nevil Shute in my late teens and was thrilled to see this old favorite finally available with Audible. As with many Nevil Shute books, it starts off slowly but then becomes completely engrossing. Fascinating picture of life in Malaya and Australia in the '40s and early '50s, engaging characters. Excellent narration, perfect for the story. Am hoping that other Shute favorites will be added soon - Pied Piper, No Highway, Trustee from the Toolroom, Pastoral, In the Wet.
"delightful story"
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this classic children's story. It was beautifully read, despite the strong American accent combined with rather odd attempts at the British accents.
"good book, but disappointing abridgement"
The story's great, the narrator is very good, but the abridgement is disappointing (although someone who has not read the book would probably enjoy this abridgement, despite the fact that many of the best characterization bits are missing). The completely unnecessary musical interludes are horrible - very melodramatic, corny, quite distracting.
