In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

This is an epic tale with lots of characters and plots. If you can follow complicated stories like 'Dune' or 'The Lord of the Rings' thenyou should like this series. G.R.R Martin is a great writer as far as how he tells the story and his way with weaving the adventure.

As head of Edinburgh’s CID, Detective Chief Superintendent Bob Skinner has seen it all…but even he is shocked by the savagely mutilated corpse discovered in a dark alleyway. The victim is identified as a successful young lawyer, and the motive for the brutal death remains a mystery. Then further seemingly random killings in the city begin to suggest a vicious serial killer on the rampage. But when the lawyer’s fiancée is also murdered, Skinner realises that someone is in deadly earnest.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

That's what seemed to happen to this story mid way it turned into an espionage novel complete with international, political back story. It was REALLY a disappointment considering that the serial killer part started out pretty good and kind of dramatic and detailed, almost Jack the Ripper worthy. Then BOOM embassy's and briefcases.

Would you ever listen to anything by Quintin Jardine again?

    Probably not

    Which scene was your favorite?

the whole beginning was good until the writer switched sub-genres

What character would you cut from Skinner's Rules?

all the political figures and spys etc

    Any additional comments?

not having the second half at all would have been an improvement at least it was the same story...

A native of Birmingham, Alabama who overcame the racism of the Civil Rights era to become a brilliant academic and expert on foreign affairs, Rice distinguished herself as an advisor to George W. Bush during the 2000 presidential campaign. Once Bush was elected, she served as his chief adviser on national-security issues – a job whose duties included harmonizing the relationship between the Secretaries of State and Defense.

The stories are ones that I did not hear before and some shocked me, like the poison scare. Other stories you get to see from another point of view. While I don't always agree about decisions that were made, this book helps to understand a little of the dynamics of 'how' they were made, especially in times of stress.

The best auto-biographies are also read by the author. You can hear her tone of voice when she recollects these moments and that is an additional insight into her thoughts.

    Overall

More story in this then strange depraved crimes. So if you are into character development then this gives you a lot of time to get to know the main characters in this story vs. listening to details of crimes or psychological assesments of them and the person commiting them.

I think this is not for fans of forensics or psychoanalytical disection.

    It reads slow.

But as always J Kellerman can still tell a story...

Arriving in the English countryside to live with her mother and new stepfather, Jenny has no interest in her new surroundings, until she encounters things on this ancient estate with ties to another world, one darker and older than anything she's ever experienced, and meets a friend in greater pain than any she has ever known.

    Overall

I like to listen ot 'Meg Cabot's : Mediator' Series. If you like that series also then this story and the characters in it are a fun bit of entertainment.

The reader is the author. This takes some adjustment at first because the main character is 'Jenny', who is a teenage girl.

But Mr. Beagle has a pleasant reading voice that flitters somewhere between proper american-english and slight yiddish on occasion.

I will be waiting for a sequel or other similar stories by this author, and I don't mind if he reads them.
