David Brin's The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream, from a modern master of science fiction. He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war. Fate touches him one chill winter's day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale.

I'm one of the few people that enjoyed the movie based on this book. I found the story familiar yet totally new. Not a true survivalist novel with hard facts, but definitely worth it.

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

If you're already a fan (TV shows or other books) you'll enjoy this one. Bourdain offers more personal opinions than travel log as he did in Kitchen Confidential.

When a plague strikes, Anchorage becomes a deadly trap for its citizens. The only two land routes out of the city are cut, forcing people to fight or die as the infection spreads. Danny and Jules, just children, witness the beginning stages of the pestilence. Neil watches helplessly from his office cubicle as Midtown is ravaged. Dr. Caldwell attempts to flee the madness of Providence Hospital, the epicenter of the outbreak. The lives and survival of these few become intertwined in the aftermath of the onslaught.

Do some research on the proper pronunciation of unfamiliar locations! I'm a live long Alaskan and can only assume that the narrator was intentionally trying to mispronounce things as he did on nearly every location name.

An accident leads to the discovery of a mysterious machine that has rested hidden deep underground for countless millennia. The machine awakens to begin issuing a series of increasingly alarming, if minor, omens. The omens turn out to be astonishingly accurate, and ever more ominous. As Zedd tries to figure out how to destroy the sinister device, the machine issues a cataclysmic omen involving Richard and Kahlan, foretelling an impending event beyond anyone’s ability to stop. As catastrophe approaches, the machine then reveals that it is within its power to withdraw the omen....

As a fan of the Sword of Truth series, I was excited about the prospect of a new addition. Even before starting it I was disappointed. Compared to the other books in the series I was unsure how Goodkind could tell an engaging story that would suck you in just 15 hours. The story overall read like a mediocre murder mystery. Too many aspects were not explored or explained. I found myself not caring about the story.

Thus begins an epic adventure set in a world of wonders and horror, where what was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

    "Not too shabby..."

Fairly entertaining, it can get a bit boring at times, but with an hour commute twice a day there are worse things that you could be listening to.
