The date is 1966 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race - but not yet dominated by it - finds itself in an all-out war. They stand against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man's growing military and economic power. The main battles are taking place in the Spiral Arm and toward the Core. But far out on the Rim, the Theodore Roosevelt is one of three ships charged with protecting the Phoenix Cluster.

Let me start with what this is not.
It is not Orson Scott Card, deep and emotional.
It is also not Asimov, overwhelming you with technical details. This is a good story about characters you come to like very quickly, and it never lets you get bored or distracted. It is light and engaging, and the hero is what he should be, a little smarter than everybody else. (a bit like James Bond) I could do without the narrators overused and distinct "said Cole",.. "said Foreyes",.. "said Cole",.. "said Fujiama",.. But this does disappear as the story continues.
I bought the second book before I had finished the first, because the characters are fun to travel with.

    Well worth the credits.

    Bring us more Miles.
This is my favorite series, and I have heard them all more than once. Most are on Audible, but keep them comming.
There are not many books with this mix of action, emotion, and humor. Great Characters that are very memorable from book to book.

Marc Vitrac was born in the early 1960's, about the time the first interplanetary probes delivered the news that Mars and Venus were teeming with life, even human life. Now, in 1988, Marc has been assigned to the US-Commonwealth base on Venus. But there are flies in this ointment - and not only the Venusian dragonflies, with their yard-wide wings....Extravagant and effervescent, The Sky People is alternate-history SF adventure at its best.

    I liked this book.
It took a while for me to get past the real history that this book (alternated and/or) left from. It is easy to suspend our reality when the story is hundreds of years in the future or in a different galaxy and time. This starts in a bad time for our real world.
The STORY though has nothing to do with Earth or our reality. It isn't even hard SCI FI. It is closer to a land of the lost story with high tech characters involved. If you listen carefully through the initial disjointed plot lines, they do come together and never let you down.
I will get the next book in this series when it comes out.

    Overall

I am a Huge fan of Robert Heinlein's books for adult readers.
After seeing the reviews above comparing this to Heinlein's book, I listened to this book before hearing or reading 'Citizen of the Galaxy' and I really enjoyed it. The story is well written, and half way through, I couldn't put it down.
This is good Science Fiction. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good listen.
