What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway? Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact. The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job - but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging.

If you could sum up The Last Policeman in three words, what would they be?

If you like TC Boyle, you should like this book. It is an odd premise and a quirky story but well told and narrated..

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Never quite knew what twists were in store. That kept me reading on.

What about Peter Berkrot’s performance did you like?

Just well done, nothing about it that distracted from the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. Better it be savored than rushed.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

What did you love best about The Cuckoo's Calling?

Mr. Glenister is the perfect reader for this book. If this becomes a series, which it has all the makings of becoming, I hope the reader remains the same. It's a home run combination. The perfect description of and attention to minor details is exquisite. The character development is perfectly paced. The sense of humor just wry enough to real, In short, there was nothing I didn't love about the writing, the reading and the story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes.... each well crafted sentence carried the real possibility of adding another clue or nuance to the mystery.

Which character – as performed by Robert Glenister – was your favorite?

Cormoran Strike....masterful. I hope we see more of him. Robin, of course, also remains ripe as a character for development in future stories. Lots of potetial here for more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really but there were many many well turned phrases and passages that were just so rich and delicious....I wanted more.

    Any additional comments?

Keep it up. Can't wait for the next one!

Robert Grainer is a day laborer in the American West at the start of the 20th century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely without hesitation. This is the first audio book I have ever listened to two times in a row. .Patton is masterful once again. This may be one of his best performances. Johnson is hypnotic in both his language and his story. I have liked every book by Mr. Johnson starting with Tree of Smoke. This one is short but call it a 'small wonder'.

What did you like best about this story?

Before you know it each word, each line has pulled you unsuspectingly into a world you can not predict. You pick up your brain and look around and wonder how you got here....like a dream.

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He breaths life and atmosphere into a the words and characters like no one else and is simply not possible with the written word.

If you could rename Train Dreams, what would you call it?

Sorry. You do not mess with a masterpiece.

    Any additional comments?

Simply a gem. Eagerly awaiting more from Johnson.

Would you try another book from Jo Nesbø and/or Thor Knai?

    Read all of them already.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

    Love Nesbo plots.

How could the performance have been better?

The reader ruined this story big time.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed...no, angry....that such a good writer's work could suffer the tragedy of this reader's work. Nesbo deserves MUCH better treatment.

    Any additional comments?

Love to see this book done over with a good reader. It would be a totally different experience.

For months, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. With each kill, the tangled network of monsters responsible for the slaughter of 270 civilians becomes increasingly clear. He is given his next target: a plump Libyan diplomat who is prone to drink and is currently in Paris without a single bodyguard. Rapp finds him completely unprotected and asleep in his bed. With confidence in his well-honed skills and conviction of the man’s guilt, he easily sends a bullet into the man’s skull. But in the split second it takes the bullet to leave the silenced pistol, everything changes.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Not another Vince Flynn!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was flat, unimaginative and forced. Character voices simply were not the slightest bit believable.

    Any additional comments?

The story was weak and formulaic and not imaginitive. Expressions and descriptions were trite at times.

GIDEON DAVIS, whose behind-the-scenes negotiating skills have earned him the role of peacemaker in conflicts around the globe, knows more about hush-hush discussions in Capitol corridors than he does about hand-to-hand combat. But his more practical, tactical skills come into play when he’s called on by family friend and government bigwig Earl Parker to chaperone a rogue agent from Southeast Asia to D.C. The agent, Tillman Davis, has promised to turn himself in— but only to his brother, Gideon.

Thomas says: "Gordon might consider going back to Producing!"
    "Unbelieveable"
    Overall

The narration fit the tone and pace of the story and captured the essence of the main characters so poorly that it was struggle to listen all the way through. The basic plot was intriguing but story itself was way too full of unrealistic coincidences. I mean, once or twice would have been OK but the believability of the circumstances and events in almost every action scene were stretched and exaggerated to the point of distraction. That, unfortunately, made me want to move on to another book altogether.
