Mickey Bolitar’s year can’t get much worse. After witnessing his father’s death and sending his mom to rehab, he’s forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools. A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey’s train wreck of a life is finally improving - until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley’s trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn’t who she claimed to be.

Where does Shelter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I had read one Coben book, and was interested in trying another. Shelter is full of teenage angst and high school drama. The story line is good, but the main character is a teenage boy with a crush. I listened through, but lost interest.

Years ago he saved her then senator husband from political disaster. And this may not be all that passed between them. With Michelle still battling her own demons, the two are pushed to the limit, with forces aligned on all sides against them.

Interesting setting, nice pace. The two main storylines do not get equal treatment, but you will understand what is going on. Also, some big events are dealt with rather quickly, to get them out of the way and on to the next event. But still, I found this to be a very enjoyable listen.

When Pippa Dunn, adopted as an infant and raised terribly British, discovers that her birth parents are from the American South, she finds that "culture clash" has layers of meaning she'd never imagined. Meet The English American, a fabulously funny, deeply poignant debut novel that sprang from Alison Larkin's autobiographical one-woman show of the same name.

Some writers think that they are the best ones to read their book. Not so, being a good writer does not mean you also have a great narrator's voice. Some do, but not this one.

“Hearts are broken,” Lillian Dyson carefully underlined in a book. “Sweet relationships are dead.” But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow's garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara's solo show at the famed Musée in Montreal.

Penny takes her Three Pines characters and adds more layers of depth. I truly enjoyed not only the plot of the murder mystery, but the changes she puts in the lives of the villagers. If you haven't listened to any in this series, do so now. The narrator is one of the best you will hear.

He came to England to rest. He calls himself Michael Shaeffer, says he's a retired American businessman. He goes to the races, dates a kinky aristocrat, and sleeps with dozens of weapons. Ten years ago it was different. Then, he was the Butcher's Boy, the highly skilled mob hit man who pulled a slaughter job on some double-crossing clients and started a mob war. What made the experience of listening to A Rule against Murder the most enjoyable?

    The narrator is amazing.
Louise Penny's descriptive prose makes me feel as if I am there. In this episode, the inspector and his wife have taken a vacation which will lead him into another investigation. It is a lovely setting, as well as an interesting plot.

No one liked CC de Poitiers - certainly none of the residents of the village of Three Pines, each of whom CC had managed to offend. Therein lies the challenge for the Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec, called in once again from Montreal to investigate murder in this hamlet. CC has been killed in an apparent electrical accident, and everyone in town has a motive, even the inspector's good friends.

I love the narration of Penny's books. Penny's vivid descriptions brings the little Canadian village to life. It simply a relaxing read. Don't mistake my comments for boring, it is far from it. But it is a light read with depth.

  • Not Taco Bell Material

Funnyman Adam Carolla is known for two things: hilarious rants about things that drive him crazy and personal stories about everything from his hardscrabble childhood to his slacker friends to the hypocrisy of Hollywood. He tackled rants in his first book, and now he tells his best stories and debuts some never-before-heard tales as well. Adam Carolla started broke and blue collar and has now been on the Hollywood scene for over 15 years. Yet he never lost his underdog demeanor.

Brett says: "Not bad but uneven and not revealing."

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who enjoys constant foul language sprinkling a story about Adam's life. I don't know if he is wanting to be thought of as a "poor unfortunate soul" or if he has no concept of the art of story telling without being foul.

What could Adam Carolla have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Leave out 80%,or even30% of the offensive language. His disclaimer to his children, if they were listening should have told me everything.

Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past never truly fades away. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all.

Would you listen to Stay Close again? Why?

Yes, to view the story again, knowing the ending. I think it will enrich the story.

What did you like best about this story?

That it was about gritty and sorted people without stooping too low to get that view.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I always enjoy his performances. Spot on!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Is "hooker with a heart of gold" simply a fairytale?

Welcome to the hilarious, strange, elegiac, outrageous world of David Sedaris. In Naked, Sedaris turns the current mania for the memoir on its proverbial ear, mining the exceedingly rich terrain of his life, his family, and his unique worldview, a sensibility at once take-no-prisoners sharp and deeply charitable.

Would you listen to Naked again? Why?

What did you like best about this story?

Sedaris' complete awareness of the events that are happening around him.

Which character – as performed by David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris – was your favorite?

Listening to their visit to their grandmother's house was a scream.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the family were all in a hotel, all in their own little worlds.

    Any additional comments?

Really funny, makes you think and can break your heart.
