At Iyot Lock, a large decaying house, two young cousins, Leonora and Edward, are parked for the summer with their aging spinster aunt and her cruel housekeeper. At first the unpleasantness and petty meanness appear simply spiteful, calculated to destroy Edward's equanimity. But when the spoiled Leonora is not given the birthday present of a specific dolly that she wants, affairs inexorably take a much darker turn with terrifying, life-destroying consequences for everyone.

Die Falknerin says: "Are you afraid of dolls? No? You will be now."
    "Classic spine-tingler!"

    Story
Where does Dolly rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Middle. I like that it was short and suspenseful but I prefer longer stories.

What other book might you compare Dolly to and why?

Poe's tales of suspense. His stories are also tight and tense.

What three words best describe Cameron Stewart’s voice?

Over the top (on the female voices)

If you could take any character from Dolly out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Lenora because she is the most complex and deliciously evil.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

B.J. says: "A stunning achievement - for author and narrator"
    "Beautifully written and profoundly sad."

If you could sum up The Goldfinch in three words, what would they be?

    Engaging. Complex. Moving.

What other book might you compare The Goldfinch to and why?

Great Expectations. It is a coming-of-age story of a young orphaned boy who learns about life through his own mistakes.

Have you listened to any of David Pittu’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

If you could take any character from The Goldfinch out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The elderly antique restorer (can't think of his name). He is kind and wise and interesting.

    Any additional comments?

Not many stories of this length can keep your attention all the way through. Mr. Pittu gets a lot of credit for that. He and Donna Tartt were a good match.

Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive....

  • How It All Began

When Charlotte Rainsford, a retired schoolteacher, is accosted by a petty thief on a London street, the consequences ripple across the lives of acquaintances and strangers alike. A marriage unravels after an illicit love affair is revealed through an errant cell phone message; a posh yet financially strapped interior designer meets a business partner who might prove too good to be true.

What did you love best about How It All Began?

I loved the way the characters lives interacted with each other, each affecting the other without even knowing it. And what characters they were!

What was one of the most memorable moments of How It All Began?

When Marion realizes she doesn't have to give into despair and finally dumps Jeremy and prepares to move on with her life.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Rose and Antoine realize they love each other but at the same time realize they can't express that love aloud.

Who was the most memorable character of How It All Began and why?

I loved Charlotte because, like me, she is older but she is utterly independent and understanding. She knows something is going on with her daughter but is saavy enough not to say anything.

    Any additional comments?

The narration is a bit fast in that hurried clipped way the Brits have, but once you get used to it, Kellgren's narration is spot on.

Waking up one wintry morning in her old farmhouse nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, Nora Hamilton instantly knows that something is wrong. When her fog of sleep clears, she finds her world is suddenly, irretrievably shattered: Her husband, Brendan, has committed suicide. The first few hours following Nora’s devastating discovery pass for her in a blur of numbness and disbelief. Then, a disturbing awareness slowly settles in: Brendan left no note and gave no indication that he was contemplating taking his own life.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Despite some predictability and lots of improbablity Milchman knows how to crank up the suspense and keep you engrossed.

What did you like best about this story?

The sense of place. Cold. Snow. Gray. I wouldn't want to live there but I enjoyed reading about it. The creepiness of the place fit the plot.

Did Cover of Snow inspire you to do anything?

    Sit close by the fireplace.
