This monumental book tells the enthralling story of one of the greatest accomplishments in our nation's history, the building of what was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Brooklyn Bridge rose out of the expansive era following the Civil War, when Americans believed all things were possible.

I grew up in New York City and had seen the Brooklyn Bridge and traveled on it many times, but never appreciated what a remarkable story there was behind the building of that bridge. In addition I learned a great deal about the history of New York City. I highly recommend this book.

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

I was wondering if such a long story could hold my interest. It was fascinating and after the first few minutes, I was hooked. The narrator was excellent and made the story come alive.

For Vito Corleone, nothing is more important than his family's future. While his youngest children, Michael, Fredo, and Connie, are in school, unaware of their father's true occupation, and his adopted son Tom Hagen is a college student, he worries most about Sonny, his eldest child. Vito pushes Sonny to be a businessman, but Sonny - 17 years old, impatient, and reckless - wants something else: To follow in his father's footsteps and become a part of the real family business.

Seemed like alot of this book was the Author trying to legitimize life in the Mafia and to act like he and his family were really good people caught up in their ancestry. Of course that is nonsense, they made a living by threatening and killing people that got in their way.

For more than three decades John Saul has haunted the New York Times best seller list - and listeners imaginations - with his chilling tales of psychological suspense and supernatural horror. His instinct for striking the deepest chords of fear in our hearts and minds is unerring, and his gift for steering a tale from the light of day into the darkest depths of nightmare is at its harrowing best in House of Reckoning.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

What did you love best about Unbroken?

The story, and the fact that it is true, and the great job the author did in describing the detail of what happened to the main characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    They all were.

Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first Audible.com book, and Edward Herrmann was fantastic. Hope he does many other books.

    Any additional comments?

This book is one that everyone should listen to to understand the war between Japan and the US, in the forties.
