    Overall

It was tedious. I imagine some of it was due to the attempt to write it in 1880s vernacular and description, but there were a great deal of words for not a great deal going on.

It's listed as young adult, but I don't see it - it has some fairly explicit violence and though not a parent I don't think it was appropriate for kids.

I read the blurb for the book on Amazon, and I think I fell into the same trap that Level 26 had for me. Don't read just the good reviews - quite often the truth lies somewhere in between. Then again, maybe I'm being too harsh. A great deal of reviews were from buyers who really enjoyed this book. I really didn't. I think I built it up in my head to be something it isn't. I was really disappointed by it.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

    Slow plot, weak characters.

Couldn't get into it, won't be investigating the next books in the series.

Overall the reviews for this were high, so I got it. Disappointing. Wasted my monthly credit.

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

    "Not that Impressive"

Seemed like more or less an excuse to trot out both the zombie and steampunk tropes. Liked the narration by Kate Reading and Wil Wheaton, but I just kept expecting more from the story. Cause of zombie curse - was left hanging. Explained in maybe two sentences. Wasn't really satisfied with it. All those buildings in Seattle had foundations, no? Why no mysterious gas released then? Perhaps I'm picking at nits.

Felt as though it could have been deeper seemed mainly travelogue with zombies and airships. If I could give it a 5/10 - that's where it would stand. Didn't deserve a 40% rating (2 out of 5) so it gets 3 stars (grudgigly at that).
