What disappointed you about The Beginning?

The entire story was slow moving. Many of the comments the main character made were just cheesy. I found myself rolling my eyes over and over.

Has The Beginning turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I have read/listened to others of this genre and really enjoyed them. I love westerns, but this one just did not do it for me.

What three words best describe Gene Engene’s performance?

The narrator was ok, not great, not bad.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Beginning?

Most of the book seemed to be lacking a punch. I kept waiting for something big to happen, it didn't. I listened to the entire book and was not impressed.

    Any additional comments?

It's not a bad story, it just needed something more. The author's descriptions were good I could picture what he was describing, but the story just fell flat and predictable. I felt like the publisher must have "pushed" the author to complete by a date instead of giving the author the time needed to make it great. Disappointing.

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now this sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel.

What did you love best about Dragonfly in Amber?

I enjoy a continuing saga and Dragonfly in Amber is book 2 in the Outlander series. I owned and read this entire series years ago but with no room to store hard copy books I sold them on eBay. I had read them each 2x through which is saying something because I seldom read any book a second time, but thoroughly enjoyed them each time back then. However, listening to them feels like a fresh new story. Although I do remember a lot of the general story line the narration is great & hearing the story with the accents, voices, and vivid descriptions made it even better.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the passion and humor shared by Clare & Jaimie. They could go from a serious situation to making me laugh out loud at some of Jaimie's thoughts and comments. I love his down to earth sense of life.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I cannot say I had a favorite scene, but really loved the story overall.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

When I purchased this book I knew it could never be completed in one sitting it's just too long, but even though I have read them before I sure found it hard to turn off the book. I have it on my iPhone so I listen in the car, while I am quilting, cooking meals, doing chores, and during a train ride... so yes, this is a book you'll not want to put down. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

    Any additional comments?

I have recommended this series to many family members and friends all of which came back with comments of being hooked on the story and characters. Jaimie and Clare feel like friends that you enjoy visiting. Ms Gabaldon's writing is superior to most. Her research is clearly demonstrated with descriptions that are so detailed you find yourself not only picturing the scenes, but feeling the bumps of the coach rides and almost smelling the food described, not to mention the passion scenes between Clare and Jaimie that are well written without feeling sleazy. Although this book can be read independent of the series I believe you will find it will be much better if you start with Outlander and read them in order.

Note: Watch out for the titles that were renamed for UK readers. It's the same story, just different titles although I am not certain why they were renamed. Enjoy!
