I would not buy these on regular price - too pricey for a formulaic story. Put it on sale again and I may be persuaded to buy others in the series.

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows.

...It was really annoying have Strike do something again to wreck his right knee, damage his prosthesis, inflame his stump, etc. Totally implausible that with all the new trauma his disabled leg was subjected to that he was not sidelined in the hospital for stretches. I'm happy to suspend disbelief but this was too much. I understand stubborn but this was downright stupid for a supposedly rational mind. Please ease off on the accidents to his stump already or get him a more adjustable prosthesis!

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

....for me to check out the next book in the series. I like Galbraith's (Rowling's) approach to character development - I kind of like Cormoran Strike who seems to be a cross between those brooding Nordic dectectives and Harry Potter. :) Certainly enough to buy the next one.

The August heat has driven the residents of Florence to the hills and beaches of the countryside, leaving a corpse lying unnoticed amid the shrubbery of a normally busy roundabout. Sandro Cellini, meanwhile, will not be joining the crowds of holidaymakers this year. The former policeman turned private detective has a case: a man who seems to have vanished into thin air, leaving his pregnant young wife alone in the city.

Far too many characters that cluttered the story development. And the characters - too depressing to be heroic. I was looking for a new series to follow but this is not the one. The sad, pathetic protagonist is just too lame to enjoy.

After two London men end their business partnership, one of them is savagely murdered in a medieval tithe barn on his estate in Somerset. Investigating the killing, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge discovers that the victim was universally despised in Cambury - even the victim's wife and the town's police inspector are suspect. And yet in London circles, the man was highly regarded. What triggered his death?

Marie says: "Entertaining procedural through the end"

    Overall

This it the first Ian Ruthledge story I've listened to and found the story a bit annoying in parts - the repetitive introjections by "Hamish" was just too much at times. The detective seemed too befuddled to be effective in assessing each potential clue. Maybe more reflective of reality but a drag after a while. I'm giving it 3 stars for the narration of Simon Prebble who does a good job.

From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned.

Among the most engaging autobiography I've listened to. Perfect combination of story, writing and narration. I did not stop listening to it from the time I started until the end. A truly exceptional perspective - most enjoyable. Well worth the time and money.

  • Death's Jest-Book: Dalziel and Pascoe Series, Book 20

Three times Detective Chief Inspector Pascoe has wrongly accused dead-pan joker Franny Roote. This time he's determined to leave no gravestone unturned as he tries to prove that the ex-con and aspiring academic is mad, bad, and dangerous to know. But over his investigation looms the huge form of Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel.

    Nesrine says: "engrossing attention-getter"
    "Pure pleasure"
    Overall

I've now "read" several Dalziel and Pascoe novels and have enjoyed every single one. This one was no exception. The character development was seamless and gave me an intimate sense of each character. While complex, the plot was effectively told. Shaun Dooley is a perfect narrator for these stories - using a unique tone for each character, like watching a play unfold. Kudos to both author and narrator!

Determined to sever his ties with the Office, Gabriel Allon has retreated to the windswept cliffs of Cornwall with his beautiful Venetian-born wife, Chiara. But once again his seclusion is interrupted by a visitor from his tangled past: the endearingly eccentric London art dealer Julian Isherwood. As usual, Isherwood has a problem. And it is one only Gabriel can solve.

Alexis says: "Silva and Gigante -- A Superb Team!!!"
"Still enjoyable but a tad formulaic"
    Overall

I've read all the Gabriel Alon novels and have enjoyed then thoroughly but this one just seemed a bit too formulaic thus predictable. I continue to be intrigued by the character so I look forward to more Gabriel Alon stories.
