"Excellent Stories, shame about the reader"
The stories, as those who know anything about Conan Doyle, are excellent. Far better than the TV series - they give Holmes a more sympathetic character and therefore a more human one. I can listen to these again and again and shall do so!
The narrator was disappointing. At times his pronunciation of words is, to say the least, peculiar. It is as though he is not used to how English should be pronounced and is trying to speak the Queen's English and getting it wrong. In addition, he does not do justice to some of the characters, particularly those of females. It is a shame and disappointing.
"Another good read by Patricia Wentworth"
Patricia Wentworth has a knack of making her books eminently readable and listenable and entertaining to the end. Whilst her main character through the books, Miss Maud Silver, plays an integral role in the books, she does not dominate them. Patricia uses her main character as the catalist from which the other characters find their way to the truth. This makes all the books very individual as all the "main" characters for each is different.
Patricia has the skill of being able to sway the reader or listener to like or dislike the character under surveillance as the guilt or innocence evolves and the true distinctive qualities are gradually revealed. Makes the books hard to put down.
I would recommend this series to everyone who enjoys a good mystery, particularly those based in the past.
I look forward to Audible to obtaining the rest of the series so that I can listen to more ...!

"Another good read from Patricia Wentworth"
Patricia Wentworth books (which I have just discovered) are extremely good and this is no exception. They do not follow one particular formula, so they are all entertaining and keep the interest to the end. This one has some excellent twists and unexpected turns and keeps the reader or listener gripped until the end.
I would recommend this and the other Patricia Wentworth books to everyone who enjoys a mystery.
I am hoping that Audible make the rest in the series available soon ...!
"He deserved to die!!"
A newly discovered author for me, but one which I am really enjoying. The Miss Silver series is great in that the language is good, the stories set in the early 1900s which means that the scene setting is also very interesting.
The author manages to sway the reader (well me, at any rate) as she builds up her characters. The herione (at first sight) appears to be a wishy washy girl - but she turns out merely to be another character in the end - the herione being someone much more deserving!! Good story which I would recommend to any murder mystery reader.
I hope audible manages to publish the rest of this series soon ... please!!
"Another excellent story by Patricia Wentworth"
This author is quite a new find for me and I am really enjoying this series.
She manages to lead you by the nose up to a point and then throw in a curve ball to knock you off your balance of thinking for a while. The characterisations are really excellent and one finds oneself either liking or disliking them as the author intends - when she throws mud at them (in the literal sense) they become less likeable. As she clears their characters, they become much more sympathetic and likeable.
A really gifted author. I am looking forward to audible publishing the rest of the series ... please!!!
"A very clever twist at the end!"
Only recently discovered this author and am really delighted with all the books I have read or listened to so far - this one is no different. In fact, the twist at the end was most unexepcted and strayed a long way from the usual formula of the murder mystery stories one reads.
The books written in the Miss Silver series are set in England in the early 1900s and the language used and descriptions of the the houses and panorama set the scene beautifully.
I would recommend this author to anyone who loves a good murder mystery in the classic style. I hope audible manage to publish the rest of the series soon ...!
"Interesting Development"
Although it was obvious from very early on in the book who the "culprit" was in this book, it was extremely interesting to see how the author brought it to the attention of the characters in the book. She developed it exceptionally well, fitting the responses and thoughts of her characters around it. It is very well written and a joy to read or listen to! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery.
"Another great Miss Silver story."
This is another great Miss Silver story with an excellent twist at the end which I wasn't expecting! I have only recently found the stories by Patricia Wentworth and am delighted with them. I would recommend them to anyone who loves mystery stories. They are set in the 1920's - 1930's and have a great atmosphere. They are excellently read, Diana Bishop getting into the characters and putting emphasis in the story where it warrants it. Just a good all round listen.
I am hoping that audible manage to get the rest of the series in audible format so I can have the complete set to listen to.
"Another good Wentworth story!"
Yes I would recommend this book to a friend. It is well read and although there are no suprises, it is a good story.
I have only recently "discovered" the Patricia Wentworth books and have to say I am delighted with them. So far they have all been very different - not the usual sameness about them that other authors seem to have.
Diana Bishop has read all of the Patricia Wentworth books I have listened to so far and she manages to make them interesting, have a good understanding of the different characters and great expression.
Yes, the scene where the herione accidentally overheard the critical conversation and her emotions.
I am hoping that Audible can manage to obtain the complete set of Patricia Wentworth books if they are as good as the ones currently available.
"Extremely disappointing!"
I have read other books by this author, and have found them to be most enjoyable. She uses good English and charactisations.
P D James ruined the characters borrowed from Jane Austin. She should have invented the characters and built them up as she wanted instead of trying to borrow those which were developed by another author and making them behave out of character. The worst book I have heard so far - so bad I couldn't bear to finish it - unheard of for me!
No!
Author should stick to her own characters.
