Best-selling author Steven Johnson recounts - in dazzling, multidisciplinary fashion - the story of the brilliant man who embodied the relationship between science, religion, and politics for America's Founding Fathers. The Invention of Air is a title of world-changing ideas wrapped around a compelling narrative, a story of genius and violence and friendship in the midst of sweeping historical change that provokes us to recast our understanding of the Founding Fathers.

Industrial ecology takes a "systems view" of the world, with emphasis on technology and the evolution of cultural and economic systems. It promotes "earth systems engineering", the ability to manage the dynamics of natural systems through recycling and other processes of sustainability. Allenby gives an informative and insightful overview of the prospects of industrial ecology.

While this is decidedly an academic presentation, I found it both enjoyable and informative. As an environmental engineer adept at life-cycle considerations, many of the points raised were enlightening. It was demonstrated that our typical areas of our concern need to be expanded. I recommend this title for all listeners interested in the decisions that mankind has to make relative to achieving true sustainability versus our current band-aid solutions.
