"Would like the whole thing!"
This is my favorite translation of Beowulf, and I have given multiple copies of this book as gifts over the years. So I was super excited to see the audiobook read by Heaney himself. And while I have no complaints at all about the reader (fabulous) or the text, i wonder what the criteria for the excerpt selections were. Some key episodes are omitted and some of the ones included aren't among the best parts of the book. THe choices are mystifying.
Still, a worthy listen - though I would definitely spring for a full-length audiobook if there is one available
"Long, leisurely, and fabulous"
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a gripping story that goes on and on forever. I love to listen to audiobooks when I'm walking my dog or doing household chores and this book made me walk and clean much more than usual!
I had trepidations about committing to this book because I didn't want to listen to a 30-plus hour novel about political intrigue. Yes there the protagonist does travel back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK, but there is much more than that going on in this book. THe protagonist is engaging, flawed, and funny and this story is much more personal than political. Though there's a bit of that too.
I don't want to give anything away. Sorry.
I liked all of his characters - I don't think I've ever listened to a book narrated by him before, but he will certainly be one to look for in the future. His voices are distinctive without being overly dramatic - the reading was expressive and entertaining without being distracting. Bravo.
Well, the length would have prevented any such thing BUT I found myself listening for hours at a time. I even started a sewing project so I could listen for a couple of hours without looking like I was just sitting around staring off into space!
Even if you think you don't like Stephen King, or if you've never tried one of his books before, go for this one. It's a great book
