I have enjoyed many of Bryce Courtenay's books but this one was just ho hum. What saves this book is the history about some of the places the story takes you. However, I could not believe anyone could truly love Anna, let alone stay with her as Nicolas did. I had to read the squeal (first is better). Sorry, Bryce had I know I would have let my imagination finish the story instead of reading book two.
Hey, what can I say besides that this is one of J.G. best books? I love the story. Set in a rural town that never really became anything and where pretty much everyone knew each other. This is were J.G. shines. He lets the characters bloom in to works of art. If you like Time to Kill you'll love this. Do check out Playing for Pizza. A book of the same Author that I was given, not bought from Audible so I can not leave a review. That book too made me say Poop, I finished it! With stories like these, written this well, sadness is enviable once the last paged is turned.
Not one for love stories or repetitive sex scenes in blushing detail that make me wonder if the author ever had sex in his or her life I can say this book gave me a what I need in a book, a great story! A darn good read that read as if it was true. That's high praise. If you need a love story or a sex scene please exit to the right. Grab another book. It probable won't be half as good as this but you can have your stupid sex and teeny bopper love stories. Sorry was that a rant?.... Pay me no mind...I have just been told once again how 50 shades of grey was the best story ever written.
I did not finish this book. Here is why. I saw everything coming. The Narrator seemed to be fluid in "cutie pie" voice. Yes, I did hear her voice on the sample but I could not imagine what two hours of listening to her would do to my want to throttle the main character. For the love of all that is dear, why would an author pick this voice? I am sure she had her pick, and this narrator was told to read it like this so I am not blaming her, the voice. But as an author why would you make the girl sound sooooo dumb.
As for the story, I saw all that did happen in the short time I listened before she let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. I would request a fast death if I had to listen to anymore..
Pick this book if you are 7 years old. No older.
With son accused of murder what would you do? What would you think? Through out this book I questioned if I could or would do what these characters did. You can see some of the story much in advance yet it doesn't stop you from being caught somewhat unaware. Well written and well told.
Love author William Landay and the narrator Grover Gardner.
JK Rowling writes a tight, not an extra word in it, story. Striker the lead character is a disabled vet who would rather do it the hard way than sacrifice his pride. In fact, I wasn't sure I liked him for the first 20 minutes. Striker is a P.I. who is on very hard times. His love is gone and he's on his last nickel. But don't count him out, he wasn't in special forces for nuthin'! Do give this story a try. Wish this was a series.
Yes, I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't like to see the plot twists and endings far too soon. Mr. Gaiman writes fairy tales for adults. But no kissy- kissy love story here. And you will not miss it one bit. He'll ask you to believe the unbelievable without reservation and preamble. Before you realize it the hook has been set and your being reeled in by this unlikely story. Fighting it is futile. Just pray for mercy.
Don't know of another book like this. Why try to pretend it's like something else. It's just another Neil Gaimen ride at the amusement park.
That's a tough question to answer. Mr. Guidall is a treasure to listen to always. He's like a favorite Uncle who you can't wait to tell a story because he will paint it well with the inflections in his voice. He make it seem sooooo easy.
I almost never like the start of Mr. Gaimen's books. He takes sometime to set the scene, and while he's doing it, I question if this book is finally the rotten egg in the line of perfectly great stories. Not all he stories can be great, right? By the end I love the book and know I will end up remembering his stories very well. Not every book is worth remembering -his are! So, always with trepidation I will read another of his and start the whole process of "was this choice of book a good one". But so far, Mr. Gaimen, you do not have a rotten egg of a story in the bunch.
What the heck, give the story a try. Who wants a mystery by the numbers anyway?
I enjoy how the author took everyday happenings and add a twist. Who wouldn't want to live in a building that had such characters as tenets? Or a odd apartments that you couldn't explain? This author took me to another place, well he really took me to more than one place and made me wish I was in the middle of the plot. Not many authors can do it as well as this one. Not a big fan of Sy-fy? Don't worry, you'll still enjoy the vacation from your ho hum existence.
This was written for a younger reader and it shows. And if you decide that a fun story is beneath your age, I undoubtedly will feel sorry for you and all the fun you'll miss. For me this book is like a vacation that you really enjoy but did nothing but sit in the sun and giggle with your sisters.
The characters, the story and the reader is perfect. Eoin has given you a break for reality that everyone needs now and again. The unbelievable other world he paints make you wish it was true. Wouldn't be fun to be a fairy or at least have elf for a friend?
Buy this recording and you'll surely make your kid's listen too.
Laura Hillenbrand tell this story of human triumph that will make your heart soar.
Why do some people survive against all odds while others crumble at the slightest hard times? In this lovely true story you get to know this bigger than life man from infant to elderly man and marvel at the gift the lord gave in at birth. As a child it seem as if this gift was from the devil himself until he harnessed the power it gave him.
Do treat yourself to a book that will give you reason to cheer. I was worried that it would be too sad of a story to finish but I was so wrong.
I like all of the Artemis Fowl books and this is no exception. Eoin keeps it funny and almost real. Almost. Warning: Wishing you were a fairy or having magical powers can take hold of you after one book in this series.
This series is a nice vacation from serious adult books.
