"Loved it!"
Kept me on the edge of my earphones!!! I enjoyed the actor who read it as well. Can we have some more of Nelson Demille please - Up Country, Plum Island, etc
"A social and cultural pericope of a time past"
I really enjoyed this novel. Set in the early 20th century in Australia, it gives us a glimpse into a different society and a different culture. It gives us an insight into an amazing people, the Australian Aborigine, who like indigenous peoples all over the globe, their mental and spiritual gifts have been lost in the whirlpool of European culture.
"Loved it!"
As usual Georgette Heyer does more than tell a love story, she presents her stories in history and we have an insight into what life was like for women and for those who were not born into the aristocracy and how most women had no control over their lives.
"Not my favourite one"
While still a good listen - I found this one abit shallower than her normal books.
"A good read"
I really enjoyed Faye Kellerman's A Ritual Bath. Authentically set in the Jewish culture it had just the right amount of depth, intrigue and romance to make it a 'must keep listening'! Can we please have some more of Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus stories, especially the early ones and please keep them in the unabridged format.
"Not enough titles"
What a little gem, Bethlehem Road is! Not only an easy and enjoyable listen, but it historically presents an authentic picture of the early struggles of the Suffragette movement and the pathetic conditions that women lived under. Can we please have some more of Inspector Pitt titles to choose from and in the unabridged format?
"A good listen"
I really enjoy Georgette Heyer, she is a comfortable, relaxing listen. Her settings are authentic and her characters enjoyable, just enough mystery, intrigue, romance and depth to get one intrigued.
"HATE ABRIDGED VERSIONS!"
I feel cheated! I had read this story many, many years ago and loved it. With the abridged version I feel like I was being shown the lives of these people, but they were only shadows of the real characters with no personality or substance. If you want a 'trashy' romance then this is for you - but if you want to be able to immerse yourself into the romance of the story, the lives of the characters and feel them come to life - dont' bother! Wait for the unabridged version to come out - it is a 5 star listen.
"Enter a doorway into another time!"
Loved it! Good characters, gives great insights into the culture and society of the times. It was a 'love' story that was not trite or shallow but Georgette Heyer gives a great 'roundess' to everyday life with the little extras that allows one to lose oneself in the time and the place. I ABHOR the abridged versions because they turn a professional writer like Georgette Heyer into nothing more than Mills and Boon.
"Abridged version is unsatisfactory"
The ABRIDGED version of Venetia left me feeling cheated and as if I had only been allowed to peep through the keyhole into this unusual and exciting world of the Regency period instead of being able to open the door and walk into the story which I am normally able to in Georgette Heyer's full versions. There is something about Georgette Heyer's Regency romances that makes them special. The depth of knowledge of the settings, the lifestyle makes one feel as one is really there and experiencing the nuance of the period. When this is taken away in the abridged version, it becomes nothing more than a trite and shallow romance. I do not like reading Mills & Boon but this is what these abridged versions become like, so if you like Barbara Cartland this is for you, but if you want something with a bit more meat than I think you may be doomed to disappointment.
