It was a horrible death: Maurice Questing was lured into a pool of boiling mud and left there to die. Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn, far from home on a wartime quest for German agents, knew that any number of people could have killed him: the English exiles he'd hated, the New Zealanders he'd despised, or the Maoris he'd insulted. Even the spies he'd thwarted...if he wasn't a spy himself.

Would you consider the audio edition of Colour Scheme to be better than the print version?

I like listening to my audio books when it is inconvenient for me to read! However, I find I am listening to them more and more! I am currently doing research and it is nice to relax with something light.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Colour Scheme?

I liked the fact that it was set against the background of the NZ boiling mud, which I have visited.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I listened to it in more than one sitting!

Captain John Staple’s exploits in the Peninsula had earned him the sobriquet Crazy Jack amongst his fellows in the Dragoon Guards. Now home from Waterloo, life in peacetime is rather dull for the adventure-loving Captain. But when he finds himself lost at an unmanned toll-house in the Pennines, his soldiering days suddenly pale away beside an adventure - and romance - of a lifetime.

Yvette says: "Great book - reader only OK"
    "Always easy listening!"

What did you love best about The Toll-Gate?

A little bit of adventure - a little bit of romance - enough authenticity not to insult the intelligence and Georgette Heyer writes so well, it is easy to be lost in her world!

Jack Anderson was a big man with a foul temper, a sadist and a drunk. Five months after his horse appeared riderless, no trace of the man has surfaced and no one seems to care. But Bony is determined to follow the cold trail and smoke out some answers.

Dennis says: "Click "next" if you are on the fence for this one"
"A social and cultural pericope of a time past"
    Overall

I really enjoyed this novel. Set in the early 20th century in Australia, it gives us a glimpse into a different society and a different culture. It gives us an insight into an amazing people, the Australian Aborigine, who like indigenous peoples all over the globe, their mental and spiritual gifts have been lost in the whirlpool of European culture.

Set in the Regency period, this is a classic tale of misunderstood love and an arranged marriage.

    Janet says: "Excellent Narration"
    "Loved it!"
    Overall

As usual Georgette Heyer does more than tell a love story, she presents her stories in history and we have an insight into what life was like for women and for those who were not born into the aristocracy and how most women had no control over their lives.

While still a good listen - I found this one abit shallower than her normal books.

Sergeant Decker is called to investigate a rape charge in an isolated Orthodox Jewish Community. Rina Lazarus, the young widow who found the victim, is the only one in the community willing to cooperate with Decker as she tries to steer him through the maze of religious laws that thwart his investigation at every turn. But as the trail grows cold, Decker and Rina grow closer - until a sudden horrific revelation about the case threatens to tear them apart.

    Maraella says: "Informative"
    "A good read"
    Overall

I really enjoyed Faye Kellerman's A Ritual Bath. Authentically set in the Jewish culture it had just the right amount of depth, intrigue and romance to make it a 'must keep listening'! Can we please have some more of Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus stories, especially the early ones and please keep them in the unabridged format.

    "Not enough titles"
    Overall

What a little gem, Bethlehem Road is! Not only an easy and enjoyable listen, but it historically presents an authentic picture of the early struggles of the Suffragette movement and the pathetic conditions that women lived under. Can we please have some more of Inspector Pitt titles to choose from and in the unabridged format?

Penniless Elinor is rather surprised at the carriage that meets her from the stage, and more so at the decayed grandeur of the house to which she's transported. Realising that there has been a case of mistaken identity she agrees to an audacious plan.

Joseph R says: "The Governess's New Position"
    "A good listen"
    Overall

I really enjoy Georgette Heyer, she is a comfortable, relaxing listen. Her settings are authentic and her characters enjoyable, just enough mystery, intrigue, romance and depth to get one intrigued.

  • Sylvester

When Sylvester, the Duke of Salford, first meets Phoebe Marlow, he finds her dull and insipid. She finds him insufferably arrogant. But when a series of unforeseen events leads them to be stranded together in a lonely country inn, they are both forced to reassess their hastily formed opinions, and begin a new-found liking and respect for each other.

Marcheta says: "Georgette Heyer and Richard Armitage - love it!"
    "HATE ABRIDGED VERSIONS!"
    Overall

I feel cheated! I had read this story many, many years ago and loved it. With the abridged version I feel like I was being shown the lives of these people, but they were only shadows of the real characters with no personality or substance. If you want a 'trashy' romance then this is for you - but if you want to be able to immerse yourself into the romance of the story, the lives of the characters and feel them come to life - dont' bother! Wait for the unabridged version to come out - it is a 5 star listen.
