The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life.

This is so well done - the main reader is excellent, and the inter-chapter voice and music is a powerful way to bring the book to life. Margaret Atwood's genius comes through yet again.

As a glassmaker and a magician-in-training, Opal Cowen understands trial by fire. Now it's time to test her mettle. Someone has sabotaged the Stormdancer clan's glass orbs, killing their most powerful magicians. The Stormdancers--particularly the mysterious and mercurial Kade--require Opal's unique talents to prevent it happening again. But when the mission goes awry, Opal must tap in to a new kind of magic as stunningly potent as it is frightening.

    "First third of the book.."
    Overall

Thus far I am enjoying the story, but the narration is distracting. The emphasis always seems to be at the wrong point in the sentence and the dialogue always has a tone quite different from what the text seems to imply. The narrator has a beautiful voice, and the tale so far is clever and unusual; it's only the inflection that interferes with my total enjoyment.
