"Good, fun summer read"
Just a good, summer read. Good characters, great super-hero Special Forces Operator and team, and exciting spy-tech with enough political and societal consequences thrown in to keep it from being pure action.
"Glad I stuck with it..."
I had a hard time getting into this one, but I'm glad I didn't give up.
One of the 2 main characters just seemed too earnest in the beginning, and I found him annoying. The growth of the other main character, Anna, is wonderful especially as life changes dramatically under Japanese occupation. By the end, I was hoping for more.
"Must listen - Whole Series"
For anyone who loves Japanese historical fiction, this is a must listen. The characters, the story, the cultural elements are all wonderful. Samurai, ninja's, Japanese art, cuisine and architecture are all in play. Amazing.
"Timeless Classic"
Somehow, I had never read this in school. I was so glad I added it to my "classics" review.
The story about the tension between society and the individual, what is happiness and freedom, and the proper boundaries of technology are timeless.
Great listen.
It's a good foil to the Ayn Rand liberalism that focuses more on the individual without boundaries.
"Good story, light on authenticity"
I read a lot of Japanese historical fiction, this story seemed light on the Japanese elements.
It was great to explore the Anu and northern Japan, but didn't pack as much cultural insight as Lian Hearn's series (highly rated) or Barry Eisler's "Rain" Character.
"Great for a trip to Caribbean"
I got this story for a trip to the Caribbean. It was great to listen to sitting on the beach. Also, I hadn't ever read a history of the region or the pirates. It was enjoyable. Good mix of adventure, politics and history.
"Hope this isn't my last journey with Rain..."
I could listen to Rain stories on-and-on.
It was fun also to get the social commentary on the political use of fear in the United States and turn to political corruption and money influence here rather than in Japan, where a number of other stories have been set.
"Compelling and Thought-altering History of Science"
Great story if you like history of science. Very instructive and compelling look back at how scientific framing of questions and research affected treatment solutions for cancer.
Good story, important lessons about personal, political and even conceptual bias as it plays out in scientific endeavors.
"Not as good as "Vodka, it's Chelse...""
I got this after literally rolling on the floor listening to "Vodka, it's Chelsea." While this was kinda of funny, it just wasn't as good. Could be cause it is based entirely on pranks she pulls rather than her self-deprecating humor that was so funny.
