"Taking us back in time"
McFadden takes us back in time to the Jim Crow south and the Harlem renaissance. Her protagonist is a memorable character. There is a plot twist that frustrated me and made this a 4 star rather than a 5.
"Little House on the Prairie for Grown Ups"
This was a great story old time story with strong female characters persevering in the face of challenges from family, the environment and social norms. There were times when it all felt a bit simplistic and that the book was a guilty pleasure, but nonetheless, I did enjoy it.
"What was the Narrator Thinking"
Interesting story, but the narrator chose to speak in a halting slow--really slow--manner whenever for the main character. The cadence was off for all of it. I listened at 2X speed which helped a bit, but what I really wanted to do is go out and buy the book so I could read it in peace.
