"Choppy"
I couldn't get through this because the narrator pauses so long between sentences. I recommend taking a sample listen before purchase.
"About three days too long"
This book was slow, long, and felt as though the writer had someone tell her "you need a scene to set up ______________" (fill in the blank). It was like reading an undergraduate's first attempt at a novel with that inability to cut anything out. I know that's pretty harsh, but I kept on going to the end in hopes that one character would finally get around to being intelligent and it just never happened.
"Appalling"
I understand why this is a best seller - it is clever and smart and the characters are well developed. The narration is great. I found it painful to listen and would have stopped listening if it had not been my book group's choice that month. I found reading about two so completely dysfunctional people stressful and not enjoyable in the least. I do not recommend to people who have ever had trouble in their relationships. If you like clever books about unpleasant people this one's for you.
"Give it a few minutes"
Enjoyable listen. The narrator was a little stiff sounding at first, but as I got to know the protagonist, it became the perfect tone and rate. A good listen for historical romance fans. Not one of those ballroom books, though, so a little less predictable and a little more interesting. The changes the leads go through happen slowly enough that they are less unbelievable than some historics.
"Amazing Narration - again!"
I don't know how Bronson Pinchot can convince me he's a naive young woman as well as a built-like-a-rock strongman, but he does. I'm starting to see a graphic novel playing in my head as I listen to these books. Very entertaining with likable heroes and heroines. Captures the flavor of noir and includes this slightly altered version of history that I find utterly enjoyable. Bigger than life fiction to help you get through that commute or pile of dishes.
"Not what I'd hoped for"
I have loved Julia Quinn's books forever. I have grown to expect enjoyable characters presented with humor. Fun books to read. This one was more your average historical romance with less of the humor I love from Julia Quinn. I enjoyed the children in this book, but more could have happened with them - she doesn't milk the unicorn girl for all she's worth. I still enjoyed the novel, it just wasn't fabulous, and usually Quinn is close to fabulous.
"Great narration"
MacLeod Andrews does such a great job with these characters. His interpretation is perfect. I really don't think this series would work with a female narrator. I love the ghost and I love the characters. The hotel reminds me of one I go to one the Oregon Coast each winter. Nora Roberts gives enough hints about the next book, and wraps up enough about the last one to make it all very satisfying. The subplots are enjoyable in their own right. I look forward to volume 3!
"Silly book"
I bought this because I had never listened to Janet Evanovich. The main female character in this book was so ditzy I almost stopped listening and would have if it hadn't been only 5 hours. Unbelievable character development and too fast relationship. This one would be good to have on while vacuuming the house so you don't mind missing half of it. I am a romance fan, so that was not the problem. I just really did not like the main character!
"Disappointing"
I made it to within an hour of the end, but when the arrogant insensitive hero continues to try to have sex with the weak willed heroine even though she says no (which to me is rape) I had to give up. None of the characters were appealing or likable and the story frustrating. The heroine was ahead of her time and I kept hoping that the hero and story would turn around, but instead, he starts to win her with forced sex and I gave up.
"A bit predictable"
I thought this one was predictable and the main character a little too rigid to be likable. But since it is Kleypas, you know it will be a nice listen even if it isn't her best heroine.
"not for me"
I listened to this on the recommendation of a friend who loves the series. I like the premiss of cross species etc, and that had me thinking for awhile that I might listen to another, but in retrospect this wasn't worth the credit. The character development was weak and the attraction between the characters not quite believable - I know - it is fantasy romance, it is not supposed to be believable, but it just didn't work for me.
