On the planet of Discworld, phrases like "there's a Death in the family" take on a whole new meaning. Young Susan has always suspected that her Grandfather was different, as though all the time he spent riding a white horse and wielding a scythe weren't enough of a giveaway.

Coral says: "Living on borrowed Music"
"Witty, entertaining and full of small easter eggs"

Where does Soul Music rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 25%

What other book might you compare Soul Music to and why?

To most of the other Terry Pratchett books

    Which scene was your favorite?

A very funny terminator 2 reference and chase scene where death attempts to ride a motorcycle - with somewhat limited success.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I did laugh. A lot.

    Any additional comments?

If you are new to Terry Pratchett and his discworld series this is a decent jumping on point.

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last 15 years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

    "Still an awesome classic"

Would you listen to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy again? Why?

Yes, but perhaps not for a few years.

What other book might you compare The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to and why?

It's british humour (with a u) so somewhat similar to Pratchett or Wodehouse.

What about Stephen Fry’s performance did you like?

Good enunciation and superb comical intonation and timing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

So Earth is destroyed, you are one of only two people left in the universe and the mice are waiting to dissect your brain but just you remember: Don't panic.

  • Feet of Clay: Discworld, Book 19

Who's murdering harmless old men? Who's poisoning the Patrician? As autumn fogs hold Ankh-Morpork in their grip, the City Watch has to track down a murderer who can't be seen. Maybe the golems know something - but the solemn men of clay, who work all day and night and are never any trouble to anyone, have started to commit suicide....

Catherine says: "Great, as usual, but with a glitch"
    "Another excellent night watch book."

What did you love best about Feet of Clay?

All the clever pop culture references to, among other things, classical robot movies like Robocop.

What other book might you compare Feet of Clay to and why?

Hmm. It's a mystery story at heart with an enormous amount of little things going on.
I'd say it compares well to Men at arms by the same author.

Have you listened to any of Nigel Planer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Solid as always.
He does not quite reach the same level as Stephen Briggs but is still a top notch reader.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The phrase uttered by Dorfl: 'Undead or alive you are coming with me' perhaps?
Or possibly 'taking names and prodding buttock'.

    Any additional comments?

Anyone interested in reading Terry Pratchetts Discworld series but has not yet done so should probably start with a previous city watch book: Guards Guards!
There is very little about this book that cannot be enjoyed on its own but most people prefer to follow the characters chronologically.

Cameras roll - which means the imps inside have to paint really fast - on the fantastic Discworld when the alchemists discover the magic of the silver screen. But what is the dark secret of Holy Wood hill? As the alien clichés of Tinsel Town pour into the world, it's up to the Disc's first film stars to find out.

"A superb book. Easily one of Pratchetts best."

What did you like best about this story?

All the ways Pratchett dreams up of poking fun at the movie/entertainment industry.

Have you listened to any of Nigel Planer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Planer is very solid as usual. He does not quite reach the same level as Stephen Briggs but is still a top notch reader.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It's too long for that. Perhaps if I was trapped on a strange desolate island where I had no need of doing anything to sustain myself...

    Any additional comments?

For newcomers to Pratchetts Discworld series this is a very good jumping on point.
Many new characters are introduced to the series in this book and there is no real need to know anything about the existing ones that turn up from earlier stories.

The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Yes. It is quite engrossing.
Good characters and a story that is not too predictable.
Since it is set in the late 70s the characters perspective differs from our in a
    refreshing way.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nope. Far too long for that.
Pointless question about an audio book this long.

The town of Ankh-Morpork is in big trouble, and the City Watch is desperate for a few good men to protect it. But all they've got are the dwarves Corporal Carrot and Lance-constable Cuddy; the troll Lance-constable Detritus; Lance-constable Angua, who is believed to be a woman; and, worst of all, Corporal Nobbs, who has been disqualified from the human race for shoving! These underdogs need all the help they can get, for they've been given only 24 hours to clean up the war-torn town.

What made the experience of listening to Men at Arms the most enjoyable?

Nigel Planer does a good job of bringing the characters to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Captain Vimes. He is nearly everyones favourite.

What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The deep bass of Deaths voice among other things.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. simply due to it being 10 hours(!) long.

  • The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 42 mins)

Richard Dawkins, the world’s most famous evolutionary biologist, presents a gorgeously lucid, science book examining some of the nature’s most fundamental questions both from a mythical and scientific perspective. Science is our most precise and powerful tool for making sense of the world. Before we developed the scientific method, we created rich mythologies to explain the unknown. The pressing questions that primitive men and women asked are the same ones we ask as children. Who was the first person? What is the sun? Why is there night and day?

Connie says: "Audio version is superb for us grown-ups"
"Entertaining juxtapositioning of myth vs reality"
    Overall

    Story
If you could sum up The Magic of Reality in three words, what would they be?

It was informative (if you are not already an avid reader of non-fiction)
    Light reading. Non preachy
    Amusing. At least in parts.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Magic of Reality?

Regarding the subject matter of myths: yes to some extent.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Nothing.
Just as clear and pleasant to listen to as always.

    Any additional comments?

There are a couple of minor errors in the book that may annoy or give people the
wrong idea. Hopefully these are rectified in a later edition.

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told....

    What disappointed you about Bossypants?

    It just wasn't that funny.
Most jokes were just mildly amusing tidbits about things I cared little about.
Despite the short length the jokes seemed few and far between.

Has Bossypants turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Nope.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Tina Fey?

Possibly, but I'd probably not buy one written by her.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There were a few funny bits but too much space between.
Fey does an ok job as a narrator.

Football has come to the ancient city of Ankh-Morpork - not the old fashioned, grubby pushing and shoving, but the new, fast football with pointy hats for goalposts and balls that go gloing when you drop them. And now, the wizards of Unseen University must win a football match, without using magic, so they're in the mood for trying everything else.

Kent says: "Not Pratchetts best but still enjoyable"
"Not Pratchetts best but still enjoyable"
    Overall

Pratchetts latest book fails to the reach truly dizzying heights he has been capable of.
As it stands it has to settle for merely being very good. Stephen Briggs is as brilliant as
always and certainly does his bit to ensure that the audio version compares well - or
perhaps even surpasses - the written work.
