Since when does Moses McGuire have a (bad) Irish brogue? I was a bit annoyed with the narration of this book. Lawrence also narrated The Hearing, which sounded terrible. This was a little better, but sheesh, the accents! Stop it! Especially when it makes no sense for the character!
As for the book itself, it was well-written, as always. I like Lescroart's mysteries.
I like John Lescroart, but I will never listen to another book read by Eric Dawe. He is absolutely horrendous. I don't understand how someone who sounds like a first-grader sounding out every word, and who gives every female character a ridiculous falsetto, can make a living as a narrator. Makes me think that maybe I'm in the wrong field.
I was constantly conscious of and annoyed by him, whether it was his stiff, staccato style, or the stupid voices he gave all of the women and some of the men. Also, it irritated me every time he pronounced Devin Juhle's last name as
Wow. The narrator absolutely killed the story. The women and children all had the same high-pitched, infantalized voice. Male characters other than the protagonist were given a dopey voice that made them sound mentally-challenged. Awkward pauses, terrible accents, and staccato dialogue--this narrator had it all.
Normally I'm a fan of Lescroart's books, but the narrator really made this one unbearable. How does someone so terrible at it actually make narration their career?? I'll never listen to another book he reads again.
I expected to love this book, but I found myself getting really confused. It seems like it skips around a bit between subject matters, so that I'd find myself listening to a description of a teacher, and then a class not taught by that teacher, and then we'd be back to that teacher.
More annoying, though, was the narrator--this guy was horrible. The mispronounciations and awkward pauses were even worse than a previous reviewer would lead you to believe.
All in all, I didn't enjoy this book, which was really disappointing, since I was looking forward to diving into it.
