At 19, Jake Adelstein went to Japan in search of peace and tranquility. What he got was a life of crime reporting at the prestigious Yomiuri Shinbun. For 12 years of 80-hour workweeks, he covered the seedy side of Japan, where extortion, murder, human trafficking, and corruption are as familiar as ramen noodles and sake.

Steven says: "Memoir, crime story and travelogue in one package"
    "Like the Japan I see"
    Overall

Many Japanese consider Japan to be the safest country in the world. This myth is apparently part of the social consciousness. Yet as Adelstein shows, the reason for this is the police activity itself is narrowly defined and police powers very limited. This gives the impression that Japan has a low crime rate. Other reviewers said that the narration was a problem. This made me think twice about purchasing this title. Don't! The narration is fine and the are only a few places in the 9 hours where the author speaks at speed but I would not have preferred a voice actor.

Adelstein's achievements as a reporter in the context of Japan are noteworthy in themselves. But he has achieved much more than just reporting as this work will tell. I also found some useful clips on Youtube to look at with the author.

I gave it five stars as it is a great true story, well told, but has social impact that really makes this an ongoing tale.

An authorized biography of one of the world's greatest spiritual leaders.

Written with the full co-operation of the Dalai Lama, this fascinating, up-to-date biography captures the public persona and enduring mystery behind one of the world's most important spiritual leaders.

    Overall

Just listened to this book over the past week, One of the best books I have ever listened to. The author's thorough research and mastery of the genre makes it a great listen.
the text covers the entire life of the Dalai Lama and includes a critical analysis of the political and social situation as it developed since 1950s. The text reads like narrative but without technical terms. The narration is excellent including voice actors that sound like the real Dalai Lama. The author takes a non-bias viewpoint throughout but clearly empathizes with the Dalai Lama's teachings and point of view without stating so. Thorough political analysis of India and China's difficult relationship then and now. This analysis includes global perspective and the human element. Lots of stories within stories. It also covers social issues in Tibet now, social attitudes toward the leader in exile, and the changing theology of contemporary Tibetan buddhism as it adapts to such ideas as future reincarnations, loss of Tibet etc.
    Totally recommend this text.
