From Atlanta's wealthiest suburbs to its stark inner-city housing projects, a killer has crossed the boundaries of wealth and race. And the people who are chasing him must cross those boundaries, too. Among them is Michael Ormewood, a veteran detective whose marriage is hanging by a thread and whose arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. And Angie Polaski, a beautiful vice cop who was once Michael's lover before she became his enemy.

    "simply WOW!"

My wife read the book, and I picked up her copy, read a few chapters and decided to give it a listen .... I liked it so much I bought a couple more of Ms. Slaughter's books, and I'll add Mr. Kramer to my list of favorite readers!

  • Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869

Nothing Like It in the World is the story of the men who built the transcontinental railroad. In Ambrose's hands, this enterprise comes to life. The U.S. government pitted two companies - the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railroads - against each other in a race for funding, encouraging speed over caution. As its peak the work force approached the size of Civil War armies, with as many as 15,000 workers on each line. The surveyors, the men who picked the route, lived off buffalo, deer, and antelope.

    A. Millard says: "Good Book, Poor Narration and Audio Quality"

Would you try another book from Stephen E. Ambrose and/or Jeffrey DeMunn?

I gave a valiant effort, and I finished the book ... it felt as if it took as long to listen to this book as it did for these men to build the railroad.

To say that the writing was repetitive and redundant is an understatement. Yes, it's history, written by a historian, but it wasn't necessary to make it as boring as a classroom! I believe there is a close proximity to the number of spikes in the railroad and the number of words in the book ... the spikes were necessary.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nothing Like It in the World?

    the end

What three words best describe Jeffrey DeMunn’s performance?

He did well, considering with what he was working.

Did Nothing Like It in the World inspire you to do anything?

In view of recent events in Libya it becomes even more of a grabber!

Scott Brick could read the phone book and make it sound exciting!

"212" was the second of Ms. Burke's novels for me ... the story grabbed my attention from the first few minutes ... I found myself sitting in the driveway listening way more than I normally do ... definitely made my commute enjoyable!

New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

    S. Sand says: "The perfect combination of author and narrator"
    "You won't be disappointed"
    Overall

Anything written by James Lee Burke will be, at the very least, great ... anything read by Will Patton, will be wonderfully entertaining ... they make a wonderful team!

For Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid's 32nd birthday, she gets an unusual gift: a homicide call out. The crime scene is in the elite Hillside neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. The victim is hotshot investigative reporter Percy Crenshaw, who has been bludgeoned to death in his carport.

Amy says: "Good book. Bad narrator."
"very good story ... not so good narrator"
    Overall

I've enjoyed everything I've listened to from Ms. Burke ... but I'm struggling to get through this one ... the narrator's voice, from accent to inflection, is positively destroying the book.

I'm going to avoid Ms. Bobbitt in the future.

The first full history of the pioneering Special Forces units of World War II, dropped behind German lines into France to assist with the D-Day landings, told by a former U.S. Special Forces colonel with unique access to surviving veterans.

    Alex says: "Really Enjoyed It"
"good history; not so good reader"
    Overall

The history was fascinating, and I learned alot, in spite of a reader who wasn't very familiar (in my opinion) with the material ... his sense of timing and punctuation via vocal inflection was, and I don't mean to be unkind, atrocious, nearly to the point of keeping me from finishing the book. It was only because of the storyline that I was able to continue to the end.

In short, I recommend the author and the history; I will avoid the reader in the future.

    D says: "A Rich Read!"
    "Devilishly Intriguing!"
    Overall

I had no idea what this book was about when I bought it ... in fact, I only bought it because I think I would even buy and enjoy listening to Scott Brick narrating the entire NYC telephone directory!

It took me a couple of hours to "get into" the book ... as much as I enjoy histories, this seemed a little bit dry ... but then I got into the rhythm ... and it came to life.

If you've ever been to Newport, Rhode Island, and you've seen the incredible cottages of the "Gilded Age" or been to the mountains of North Carolina to visit the Biltmore, or even if your only "taste" of the history of the era was the movie "Titanic" you'll appreciate this masterwork docu-drama-mystery!

I've spent some time in Chicago, so the areas, buildings, and names were familiar. I've spent time there in brutal summer heat, and in agonizing winter's cold, which gives even more understanding to the environment. I remember attending the New York World's Fair way, way back in the 1960's and thinking about the amazing feat of putting that together ... and to interpolate that task back to the 1890's was wonderful fun!

    I heartily recommend it!

the author is great, the story spell-binding, and Scott Brick's narration brings it all to life ... I stayed awake way, way too late to finish this one!

The end came too soon, and was a total surprise! I'm shopping now for the next outing for these characters!
