Aboard the science ship Intrepid II, Captain Spock, commanding some of his old crewmates, faces his greatest challenge and his most difficult choice. "Fascinating!" says Leonard Nimoy, who narrates this "dramatic tale...that answers long-standing questions about Spock's life choices."

    "Sound effects were distracting"
    Overall

The book itself is very revealing into the motives behind Spock joining Star Fleet. Also, Vulcan interpersonal relationships and prejudices are explored. Hearing a book read by Leonard Nimoy himself, who could go wrong? Unfortunately there are periods of narration where there are sounds like a racketball game is going on in the background. Mr. Nimoy's voice is muffled, and I am distracted by the sound effects. I thought someone was throwing a ball against the house. If you can get passed all the distracting sound in background, then you will be satisfied.

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.
