From Michelle Carver - I rarely write reviews but I simply had to with this book. This book is not a political book about her term under President Bush. And you don't need to agree with her politically to find yourself absolutely enthralled by this book. As the title suggests, this is a memoir of her family history, how she was raised, the choices her amazing parents made to help her become who she is today. Besides being a very engaging writer, I thoroughly enjoyed her narration as well. I found myself completely sucked into the book unable to turn it off even late into the night, like a good fiction novel might capture me. She was raised in Birmingham, Alabama during the civil rights movement and her completely thorough description of everyday life as a black family carving out a piece of happiness through those tumultuous times was simply astounding. The details she recalls paint a completely clear picture, I could see what she was describing and it was terrific, every stage of her life fascinating. She's completely amazing and I hope she writes more, I'll definitely read it. Two thumbs up!!!
I really enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees but this was fantastic!!!! Amazing work of historical fiction that the author clearly researched thoroughly to twist a heart wrenching tale out of the true lives and circumstances of a surprising number of people. The author's note at the end is definitely not something to skip!! Jenna Lamia and Adepero Oduye do a superb job with narration as well, great, all the way around.
Michelle, Steve's wife. :) I downloaded this book blindly (not knowing a thing about it, I didn't even read the summary) at the recommendation of my sister-in-law and the story of Alice's journey down the path of early onset alzheimer's disease was so masterfully told I had to remind myself it wasn't possible for the story to be an actual memoir! I will definitely be reading this again for sure! It's intelligent, fascinating and thought provoking all at the same time ~ from page one to the end, it doesn't disappoint. Alice gives a speech, not as a Harvard professor, but as a woman living with alzheimer's, that is so thoroughly compelling it actually had me in tears! The ending was a true revelation. Loved this book!
Michelle, Steve's wife. :) I was looking to find something light, entertaining and chick-like to help me pass the time while doing a room painting project and this was PERFECT!!! I immediately recommended it to my sister-in-law who was going on vacation. While I know nothing about Texas women or the Junior League, and I'm sure I didn't learn about either here, this was a really fun way of pretending to get a peak into a world that seems the epitome of the lifestyle of an elite southern woman. You grow to love the heroine more and more by the minute, and the character development of supporting cast is strong enough to really make you feel like you are getting to know, and root for, several supporting characters as well. Jenna Lamia does an excellent job of providing unique voices for the various characters making it easy to almost see a circle of women in conversation, not to mention the high-class/low-class distinction. I enjoyed her readings of several other books I've downloaded though I didn't actually seek her out, she's done such a great job with each of the books I would definitely be willing to see what else she's read. The fact that I wasn't really caught off guard by unbelievably shocking twists in no way detracted from the overall entertainment value of the book. Sometimes you don't want to think, you just want to sit back and enjoy, this is a perfect book for that! I have another room to paint and I'm downloading another book by this author right now. Although I would be happy to listen to this one again. :) Two thumbs up!
There isn't a mystical magical secret in any "stop procrastinating" themed book of course. I'm smart enough to know to make lists and do the hard things first. I was looking for a well written, well read, motivating book to listen to that makes me want to get off my duff and quit procrastinating and this is an excellent book for that purpose! I don't think there can be too many books in a person's library that motivate them to push harder and smarter for success. I'll read all I can on the same subject until I get it, over and over again! Two thumbs up.
Michelle, not Steve, Carver: I absolutely loved this book! I've probably listened to it to it 3 or 4 times already. It's very fast moving and the ideas are very well organized. I did not buy this book to find a never-before-heard of secret to self-discipline and so hearing familiar thoughts and ideas was in no way a disappointment to me. Rather I'd hoped to find motivational encouragement to put into practice those ideas I know to be true about achieving greatness in life and this book absolutely delivers! I'll definitely be listening to this book many more times. I honestly find myself already doing hard things that I would rather procrastinate and that is the motivation I hoped to find in this book. Two thumbs up!
This book came highly recommended to me and WOW! did it deliver! The narration was simply extraordinary, each character uniquely distinct and emotionally spot on. The story was engaging from the opening lines, I was hooked immediately. I've never read historical fiction before and now I'm sorry I haven't, this was simply amazing. In fact, when I finished it, I had to start it over and listen again right away, it was that good. This is a sure thing.
Actually I'm Steve's wife, Michelle.
Fabulous well written characters with depth, creative storyline that keeps your heart beating fast and furious, great reader, well worth the listen to! I'm downloading the rest of the books now and plan to listen again when I'm thru them all!
I won't lie it took time to get into but then I fell in love!!!! It was awesome!!! And the other books in the series I loved too, though not as good as the first. I've listened to it 4 times!
