Author Paul Torday makes his debut with this clever absurdist novel. Fisheries scientist Dr. Alfred Jones is approached by an extravagantly wealthy sheik with a novel plan. To foster goodwill, the sheik would like to introduce salmon fishing to Yemen - the same Yemen that is largely a desert - and politicians think it's a great idea.

I had wanted to read this before seeing the movie - enjoyed the performances! Held my interest well, good nuances and very expressive. Highly recommended.

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

I don't know what I was expecting after reading the glowing views, but this wasn't it. So many directions this book could have gone after the first few chapters and can't imagine in going in a less satisfying way. Felt that the author was able to do a good job in the reading, adding emphasis and drama where it needed to be. Dark and disturbing; not my cup of tea.
