I have to agree with one of the prior reviewers that too many characters are introduced too quickly in the beginning of the story, some of whom appear at first to be superflous to the story.I had to go back and re-listen to get the characters straight. However once I had sorted out who was who I found the narration excellent (as always with Michael Jayston) and the charcaters developed in depth as the story unfolds. The suspense builds to a good conclusion and I was sorry to lose the characters at the end wanting to continue with their life stories after the "murder".
Apart from the story about the race horses, which was very enjoyable, the stories are all very dated . They seem to ramble and be very verbose and not get to the story. Several presuppose a suspension of rational belief and a general belief in the supernatural which I do not believe is common today.
This is a well crafted story with a start, a middle and an end. It certainly gripped me to the end. But for my liking this story had far too much very graphic violence. and the hero is a very flawed character indeed. I prefer my heros if not perfect than at least a little admirable.
This novel is not strictly in Le Carre's usual genre of the spy novel but it has the pace and mystery and well written characteristics of his other novels. What sets this one apart is Le Carre's interpretation / reading of his own characters..He really brings them all to life and gets the accents and manerisms just down pat, to the extent that I could easily visualize each and every one of them and felt I knew them all intimately. Obviously he has an advantage in narrating his own work but I would still rate this the best narration of any book I have yet listened to. Somehow his writing has become more subtle and sophisticated with amusing nuances or perhaps it is his interpretation of his material that makes this a truly a great listen. Great story as well.
Perhaps I was not paying enough attention in the beginning but I could not quite figure out who was who and what was going on but once I got into the story and figured out the characters, I was fascinated. It is quite a long listen but does not feel that way as the story keeps moving at a fairly fast pace and is very interesting.Definitly worth a credit.Only one small complaint - I know a lot of people actually talk this way but the raised tone at the end of some sentences as if they were questions, that are not actually questions was a little jarring.
A fairly good story but the book repeats itself endlessly. If it had been edited properly this would have been much shorter and more enjoyable.
really a very drawn out story which could have been half the length.Characters were not particularly credible or likeable.
I took this book as a favour to my husband who quite enjoyed it.We both felt it was not realistic. For my part the blood guts and gore were too graphic too much and really not enjoyable .The charcaters were poorly developed stereotypes and the assumptions and motivations of the characters childish and unbelievable.Ladies leave this one to the men.
The author tries to cash in on the popularity and formula of the Bond mystique but fails badly. This bond is not too bright, not witty nor very brave. The story did not follow logically from a start to a middle to an end an quite frankly I did not much care, and could not wait for it to be over.Towards the end I only listened with half an ear. Really bad story , no glamour and not much else to reccommend it.Also too much gratuitous violence for my liking.
I downloaded this book because I had enjoyed one of the other Kate Shugak novels.Having listened to that fairly recently most of the Alaska "atmosphere" and references to the development vs jobs debate and the foetal alcohol syndrome problems were repetition and rather tiresome. The storyline was good but a little dis-jointed and the author leaves a little too much blank for the listener to fill in for themselves.I kept going back to listen to what I thought I had missed only to find the climatic moments she had carefully built up were not there.Very well read by the narrator.
