Artemis Fowl’s archenemy Opal Koboi has masterminded a way to simultaneously secure her release from prison and bring the human and fairy worlds to their knees. And, unless Artemis can stop her, the evil pixie’s next move will destroy all human life on Earth. Ground zero is the Fowl Estate, where Opal has reanimated fairy warriors who were buried there thousands of years ago. Their spirits have possessed any vessels they can find - corpses, Artemis’s little brothers, assorted wildlife - and they are bound to obey Opal’s every command. Defeating the motley troops and their diabolical leader will require all of Artemis’s cleverness.

If you could sum up The Last Guardian in three words, what would they be?

    funny, action-packed, adventurous

What other book might you compare The Last Guardian to and why?

I feel that the entire Artemis Fowl series (8 books) is at the very least as good as the Harry Potter franchise. I'm surprised it's popularity hasn't blossomed more than it has.

What about Nathaniel Parker’s performance did you like?

Nathaniel Parker has narrated all of the Artemis Fowl books, and he has come to be the life of the characters to me. No one else could transition from Artemis's dry deadpan wit, to Holly Short's frustrated outbursts to Foley's egotistical musings as weel and with such ease as he does. He makes every character come to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved this book. I only hate that it is planned to be the series finale to the Artemis stories.

    Any additional comments?

Artemis Fowl, the teenage criminal mastermind - turned - hero, and his fairy friends Holly Short, Foley the Centaur, and Mulch Diggums the Dwarf of the underground (quite literally!) LEP (Lower Elements Police) - Recon unit, are back in the 8th and final novel in the series. The evil Pixie Opal Coboy has come up with a plan that will cause Armageddon on earth - and it's up to genius Artemis and his friends and ever present bodyguard Butler to once again save the world!

My name is Drood, Eddie Drood, aka Shaman Bond. For generations my family has protected you ordinary mortals against things that lurk in the darkness, just out of sight, but not at all out of mind. Unfortunately, I’ve had a falling out with my near and dear (some of whom were trying to kill me), so my true love - and powerful witch - Molly Metcalf and I are now in the employ of The Department of the Uncanny. We’ve been given an Extremely Important Assignment: attend Casino Infernale, an annual event held by the Shadow Bank, financiers of all global supernatural crime. Our mission: rig the game and bring down the Shadow Bank.

Eddie Drood is at it again! No longer acting as just an agent of the Drood family, Eddie and his better half Molly Metcalf. (the Wild Witch of the Woods) are now working for the Regeant of Shadows (Eddie's long thought deceased grandfather) at the Department of the Uncanny. His and Molly's first mission with the department? Infiltrate the games at Casino Infernale, win big at any cost, and bring down the Shadow bank. Just another case for the infamous Edfie and Molly, right? Except that Edfie has to do the unthinkable - give up his android family Torc, the source of his Strange Matter army, for the duration of the mission to bypass the Casino Security! Promising yo give it back when the mission is over, Eddie's Forc is removed by the Armorer and the incarnation of the Strange matter Ethyl. Now stripped of his seemingly limitless Drood power and reduced to the identity he uses in the everyday spy world, Shaman Bond, Effddir and Molly are off to France to break the bank at Casino Infernale. If Eddie can survive the mission and return to Drood manner, he will be given his Torc and his Strange Matter armor back. But surviving the Casino as just a normal human may be more than Eddie (Shaman) can handle! This is the 7th book in Simon R. Green's "The Secret Histories" about the Drood family-the secret family that has dedicated its existence to standing between the world at large and the Supernatural Powers and Domination that threaten it daily!

Victoria Laurie has done it again! Finally settling the super duo of Abby and Dutch (FBI Agents extrordinaire) in Texas; the new home is built, and the wedding day is fast approaching! But seemingly random people, girls, have been walking into crowded venues wearing explosives, and blowing themselves (and those in the immediate vicinity) up! Abby has a bad feeling about the case, her intuitive senses telling her that if she gets involved it will hit closer to home than anyone thinks, yet she has the feeling that she has to get involved in order to protect Dutch. So as she races to catch a bombing madman while trying to make it down the aisle to the man she truly loves, she has to tangle with the echoes of a past wedding gone wrong wreaking havoc with her perfectly planned (by her sister, Cat) day and making sure that the bad guys always get what's coming to them. This is the kind of read I can get lost in over and over again...

Meet Shaman Bond, aka Eddie Drood, scion of the ancient Drood family. He is devoted to protecting humanity from the forces of darkness. Protected by the secret weapon received at birth by all members of the Drood family - a magical gold torc (i.e., a neck ring) that turns into a suit of nearly impervious golden armor - Eddie faces arcane dangers with healthy doses of wry self-confidence and sarcasm. Then the family matriarch sends him on a mission that turns out to be a deadly setup.

"Another excellent series from Simon R. Green"
    Overall

I have long been a fan of Simon R. Green and his graphically horrific Urban Fantasy series "The Nightside", and I love his new novel "Ghost of a Chance", so I decided to give his "Secret Histories" series a try. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. Green's masterfully blended elements of the macabre and urban fantasy shine through in this series as well as it ever does in any of "The Nightside" novels. The only thing I regret is that I waited this long to start on the "Secret Histories"! As far as the first book of a continuing series goes, you can't get much better than "The Man with the Golden Torc". The one thing I especially like about this book is that in addition to the urban fantasy element, Green manages to deftly add a touch of the spy world. I definitely give this book the full 5 stars!!!

Even in Grundy, Alaska, its unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem.

    Overall

I was a little curious when this book showed up in my "We Thought You Might Like" list on audible, but I was intrigued by the title, so I bought it. Trust me, it's well worth the money (or the Credit!) This was one of the most beautifully described books I ever listened to. Molly Harper certainly has a way with imagery - Grundy, Alaska is painted so beautifully you'd almost swear you were there! And you couldn't ask for a better narrator than Amanda Ronconi. All in all, this is one of my favorite new books this year. Molly Harper is certainly in my favorite author list now!

"Taylor is the name. John Taylor...My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding things. It's part of the Gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside - the hidden heart of London where it's always three a.m., where inhuman creatures and otherworldly gods walk side-by-side in the endless darkness of the soul. Assignment: Joanna Barrett hires me to track down her teenage daughter, who decided to forgo the circus and run away to the Nightside."

    Angela says: "The Nightside"
"An Excellent Mix of Supernatural and Neon Noir..."
    Overall

Simon R. Green's Nightside is one of my favorite series, alongside Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files". Green's Nightside is much darker though, and his very graphic descriptions of the baseness of Human need and descent into decadences we can only imagine are chilling. Then, like like a flaming Neon Sign blazing against the Nightside comes John Taylor, the bad boy that every girl loves and every boy wants to be. If you are looking for a series to take you into places you never thought you'd go, this is it.
