Why this is offered and not the series it comes from, I don't know. This book can only be understood if you've read Ann Bishop's Dark Jewels Trilogy. If you haven't - don't bother. You won't understand any of it.
If you have and liked the series enough to want more - then I recommend it. This is pure escapism and as such is low on shocking plot twits or anything of that sort. It's just the characters we all know and love from the Black Jewels Trilogy coming out to play again.
It's actually something of a Halloween story but would be fun at any time of the year.
Not great literature, no. But all the more fun for it's touch of silliness.
First and for most, this is a pure unadulterated FLUFF. It's a hot story about two guys getting in on against a background of supernatural fun. It even means to raise the complex issue of the nature of sexuality and the specter of homophobia and family expectations. However, that being said, this story is FLUFF! If you want more than that a more complicated look at these issues - go look elsewhere. But if you want a bit of hot, guilty little pleasure - have at.
My one MAJOR issue with this is the reader. He's not bad but he reads these really hot sex as if he was stating a list of facts. Still, he's not bad. I'd give a listen to the free preview and decide whether he bugs you or not. If you anything like me, you'll be a little annoyed at first and then get used to it.
I'm not giving this audiobook a 5 star rating not because I didn't love it. The author is one of my all-time favourites and this book is her at her best. I've read it more than once and just adore it.
I'm giving it a 4.5 because I had issue with the reader. I hassen to add that there's nothing WRONG with her - but she just doesn't sound like Sunshine to me and often misses her 'voice' in a way that bugs me. I fully admit that this is largely because I HAD read the book so many times before buying the audiobook - I'm totally bias and had very definite ideas about how it should be done. Give a listen to the sample and if she sounds fine to you - she IS a very good reader - then you won't have any problems.
As for the book - I can't recommend it highly enough. This is NOT your grandmother's vampire story! ;-)
Okay - if you're looking for something shocking, new, utterly unique, and edgy - don't bother. This is just fun. Low on surprises or unexpected plot twists. But if you enjoyed the first book you'll like this one too. I, personally, have taking a great liking to the characters and am looking forward to the next instalment in the series. These books are escapism at it's best. A bit silly maybe, but almost more enjoyable for that.
Don't look for the raw sexuality of Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series, even if these do take place in the same world. This one is for a younger audience. But she still manages to do what I feel she does best - interesting characters and a fun world. And 'good guys' who aren't necessarily nice, but are all the more interesting for it.
The reader isn't too bad. She's the same one that read the first one and when I first began listening to that one - having been given the book as a gift - I rolled my eyes and was ready to turn in off in less than five minutes, convinced I'd never be able to stand her. But I got used to her surprisingly fast and I think that she does a good job of giving character to the characters and the feel of a teenage girl to Chloe voice. So, don't be put off by her little girl quality - she does a good job and I hope they'll have her read the next one when it's out.
