I almost passed over this little gem after reading some of the other reviews. Yes, it is a bit slower than many of his other books, so if you are looking for trademark King terror, you won't find it here. What you will find is a thought-provoking bit of King philosophy that is both surprising and satisfying. If you can stick around for the last few chapters, you won't be disappointed.
Kudos to Steven Weber for a stunning narration. I could not put this book down! No one writes horror like King, and now, I can't imagine any other reader for his works. Buy this audio!
With its ideal matching of author to narrator, "Pompeii" transports you to the last days of the city in August 79 AD. Close your eyes and allow the outstanding narration to guide you into the fray of the corruption and superstition as the signs of impending disaster are encountered. The accurate historical and scientific information pulled it all together with perfection. For 2 days, me and my iPod were inseparable until I had heard the entire 13 hours. A great summer read!
This has to be one of my favorite Audible selections in the 2 years I've been a member. Yes, it's a bit uncomfortable to read post 9/11 as this book alludes to horrors which were yet to come at the time of its writing, but don't let that put anyone off. Scott Brick is a master at weaving you through DeMille's bicoastal pursuit of a Libyan avenger, using perfect timing and near perfect inflection to carry you weightlessly through the 13 hour read. Only one thing made me flinch. No Irish cop from "New Yawk" would say Slayn-tee instead of Slainte (SLAWN- teh) a traditional Gaelic toast. One other minor pronunciation lapse from those of us from Lawng Island... Islip is pronounced EYE-slip. All in all, this deserves more stars than I can give it here.
Within moments of plugging into this audio book, I was completely hooked. Told impeccably by the narrator, whose sweet Southern accent brought you effortlessly into the world of Lily, Rosaleen and August, the sometimes sad and sometimes humorous story unfolded beautifully. One word came to my mind as the story closed. More. This book is a treasure.
