Ten excited guests arrive at the Westlake Estate, expecting a lavish retreat. They are the winners of a sweepstakes to "Live Like a Billionaire for a Week." But what was supposed to be a promising escape soon turns into a horrific nightmare. Within hours of arrival, the guests sit down for an extravagant dinner. When they pull their party poppers as instructed, a loud chorus of bangs resounds, followed by earsplitting screams as the guest seated at the head of the table bursts into flames and slumps to the floor.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It's a "how done it" - not a who dunnit ; the who turns out to be completely irrelevant. What this story is missing - is a story. Fine for people who don't like characters, plot or even good sense in their audiobooks.I want the time I wasted on this audiobook BACK! Anthony Zuiker should have his writers card revoked.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Nothing by the people who brought me this aural fecal matter.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gildart Jackson?

Poor man, he must need the work. There's no other reason he'd stoop to reading such pure drivel.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes, it ended (but not soon enough)

    Any additional comments?

    None that you can post.

Little progress had been made by the Thames Valley Police since the discovery of a corpse in a North Oxford flat. The victim had been killed by a single stab wound to the stomach. The police had no weapon, no suspect, no motive, but within days of taking over the investigation, Chief Inspector Morse and Detective Sergeant Lewis uncover startling new information about the life and death of the victim, Dr. Felix McClure, late of Wolsey College, Oxford.

What did you like best about The Daughters of Cain? What did you like least?

It had some nicely complicated connections that required paying attention to. disappointed in the main character. Thought he was unlikable.

What was most disappointing about Colin Dexter’s story?

    Main character

Would you be willing to try another one of Frederick Davidson’s performances?

    nope

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    nope

The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim. A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not a waste of time, but I won't listen again.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

That's difficult to say because I guessed the murderer. I had just seen an " Inspector Morse" and it had a very similar twist.

What does Graham Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

What I simply couldn't buy was that a fairly stable female character could learn what she did about the main character and not have serious reservations about him.

Did The Mermaids Singing inspire you to do anything?

    nope

Cold-blooded murder just isn't Thomas Lang's cup of tea. Offered a bundle to assassinate an American industrialist, he opts to warn the intended victim instead - a good deed that soon takes a bad turn. Quicker than he can down a shot of his favorite whiskey, Lang is bashing heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting his life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femme fatales. Up against rogue CIA agents, wannabe terrorists, and an arms dealer looking to make a high-tech killing, Lang's out to save the leggy lady he has come to love...and prevent an international bloodbath to boot.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yup. Thought the end was very John D McDonald and I like that in a mystery.

What other book might you compare The Gun Seller to and why?

The wrap-up and sheer loathsomeness of the bad-guy reminded me of a Travis McGee story by John D McDonald.

Which character – as performed by Simon Prebble – was your favorite?

    The protagonist

If you could rename The Gun Seller, what would you call it?

    Well I wouldn't rename it.

    Any additional comments?

It was slow going to get into the story even though the writing was fun to listen to. It picked up speed toward the middle and had a satisfying conclusion. Just wish Hugh Laurie has read it.

  • Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

If you could sum up Lamb in three words, what would they be?

    Irreverent, thoughtful, fun

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lamb?

There were so many, but what got stuck in my head was "BOOM! chaka-laka-laka"

    Which scene was your favorite?

Again, hard to say. I will add that I was reading passages out loud to my husband, and even without the full context, he was laughing, too.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was surprised at how it could be low brow and thoughtful at the same time.

    Any additional comments?

Very glad my son recommended it, only wish I hadn't waited so long to listen.

Most of us grow up having always known to touch wood or cross our fingers, and what happens when a princess kisses a frog or a boy pulls a sword from a stone, yet sadly, some of these things are now beginning to be forgotten. Legends, myths, and fairy tales: our world is made up of the stories we told ourselves about where we came from and how we got there. It is the same on Discworld, except that beings which on Earth are creatures of the imagination - like vampires, trolls, witches, and possibly, gods - are real, alive and in some cases kicking on the Disc.
