On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Where does Team of Rivals rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the most excellent biographies I have ever come across.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Abraham Lincoln is definitely a leader whose kind we desperately need today.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Choosing a female to narrate a book which is 90% about men and quotations from them is as questionable as it would be to choose a male to read "Little Women".

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    impossible

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

    Any additional comments?

I have a difficult time understanding the attraction to so many modern novels which have such unlikeable main characters. Major players in the story are all annoyingly self-centered. Why would I care if anything good or bad happens to people about whom I care so little? That this book is a run-away best seller tells me that I'm missing something...

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Women who feel powerless and paranoid

What was most disappointing about Margaret Atwood’s story?

It was so bleak and unbelievable

What three words best describe Claire Danes’s voice?

    somnolent, sad, monotone

    Any additional comments?

I love Claire Danes' work in film, but this story was so morose, I'm surprised I stayed with it till the end. I kept hoping it would get better before my new monthly credits arrived. I was disappointed.
