In the year 1912, 19-year-old Christy Huddleston leaves home to teach school in the Smoky Mountains – and comes to know and love the resilient people of the region, with their fierce pride, their dark superstitions, their terrible poverty, and their yearning for beauty and truth. But her faith will be severely challenged by trial and tragedy, by the needs and unique strengths of two remarkable young men, and by a heart torn between true love and unwavering devotion.

The book, yes. This audio book, no.

    Any additional comments?

This is the most flat narration I have ever heard. I love the book and have read it numerous times, but could not stand to listen to even the first chapter! So sad!

Rosa grew up an orphan in a remote, watery island fastness on the wild East coast of Yorkshire. Taken in as a small child by the motherly Mrs Drew, she realised as she grew up that this large and seemingly close farming family contained many troubled souls. Mr Drew, whose religious fervour held a dark secret; Jim, the eldest son, who was terrified of something from his past; Delia, longing to escape from the island; and tall, handsome, confident Matthew, who wanted only one thing – Rosa herself.

What did you love best about Rosa's Island?

    Enjoyable read.

What does Phyllida Nash bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Phyllida Nash did a great job portraying the various voices of the characters. I really like the speech culture of the people of the island.

    Any additional comments?

I have often wished that there were ratings for books. If there were, I would rate this one PG -13. It was not graphic, but did touch on some situations I would not share with a child or teen. I was a bit nervous when I read the first situation that more would follow that were graphic. Not so. About as much as I am willing to read though.
