I first heard this story many years ago when it came out on cassette tape. I was driving across Europe, listeing to this story about an author who traveled across Europe in search of the reasons why in a dead man's life. I still enjoy listening to it today. Mr. Spencer was a good choice to narrate this story. The film, "The Mask of Dimitrios" runs pretty close to the book and I couldn't imagine better actors than Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Zachary Scott to play the characters as originally written by the author. Mr. Ambler's descriptions of characters are sympathetic and on the mark. Desparation, frustration, unrequited love and greed are well written. Highly recommended for those who are able to place their imaginations back in the 1930s.

No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team - affectionately called "the Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself - uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

What made the experience of listening to No One Would Listen the most enjoyable?

Scott Brick is a very good reader. He reminds me of Frank Muller.

What did you like best about this story?

Author/reader used tracks from live congressional hearings to demonstrate the outrage of how Madoff got away with his scheme for so long.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I thought the author's recommendations were good but hard to implement because, whether he likes it or not, politicians pass the legislation on which policy and regulations are based. In this time of sequestration, few people will ask for more funds and put their promotion chances in jeorpardy. Also, comparing the SEC to the IRS is not fair. The IRS brings in revenue for the government by collecting taxes. Most other agencies spend money, although that is their job, cutting costs in budgets is what gets people promoted. Time will tell how any changes are implemented and how effective they will be.

In the six volumes of the Library of the World’s Best Mystery and Detective Stories, Julian Hawthorne presents us thrilling and mysterious short stories from all corners of the world. Some of the stories appeared in this 1907 collection for the first time translated into English, and many of them come from unexpected sources, such as the letters of Pliny the Younger, or a Tibetan manuscript. In the first volume, we find stories written by American authors.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The first few stories were written by French authors. Unfortunately the reader had not learned French and he mispronounced such simple words as "monsieur" which he pronounced as "moan-sewer." As a lifelong mystery reader, some of these stories were predictable. So, I look for how the story is told. They were so-so overall.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Scott Woodside?

Anyone who knew how to speak French.

Was Library of the World's Best Mystery and Detective Stories worth the listening time?

    Not really.

The Twelve Caesars was written based on the information of eyewitnesses and public records. It conveys a very accurate picture of court life in Rome and contains some of the raciest and most salacious material to be found in all of ancient literature. The writing is clear, simple and easy to understand, and the numerous anecdotes of juicy scandal, bitter court intrigue, and murderous brigandage easily hold their own against the most spirited content of today's tabloids.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to an ancient history or roman history buff.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I cannot say I had a favorite ceaser because I learned new or different facts/gossip about each. The author had a unique viewpoint of the 12 and it was interesting to compare, say, the history of Claudius to the work of Claudius translated by Robert Graves.

What about Charlton Griffin’s performance did you like?

    His narration was adequate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to listen to this in parts rather than try to take it all in at one listen. Some stories were a little juicier than others and I wanted to listen to them more than once.

Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and/or Scott Sowers?

I do not know if I would listen to another book written solely by Preston. This is too bad because I like the Preston/Child duo. Sowers was decent narrator, had good pronuciation on most words I knew.

If you’ve listened to books by Douglas Preston before, how does this one compare?

It was too easy for me to guess the premise of the story and who was responsible for the

Which character – as performed by Scott Sowers – was your favorite?

None of the characters engaged me. As mentioned by previous reviewers, the characters were stereo-typed.There was no real hero, although I suppose there were distinct villians.

I would not bother to see this if it were made into a film.

Coverage of each episode includes a plot synopsis, Rod Serling's opening narration, behind-the-scenes stories from the original artists who created the series, and a complete list of cast and credits.

Where does The Twilight Zone Companion, 2nd Edition rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks very high among the books I have listened to so far because it covers the impressions of the writers and actors who actually worked on the show rather than some 3rd party commentator. The author covered all of the stories to include the ones that were not included in the syndication.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Like the author, I favored the stories with Burgess Meredith. He was a brilliant actor in any genre.

What does Tom Weiner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accents were pretty good and his Rod Sterling impressions brought the humor that should have been there. There was also tragedy and bewilderment, well portrayed by the narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did want to listen to the entire book in one sitting. I kept going back over the parts I wanted to hear over again.

    Any additional comments?

This is a reading of a compendium so listeners shouldn't expect this to listen like other nonfiction works.

I was soooo happy when Audible finally got all 3 of the Bruce Catton series. No one book can cover an entire epoch but Catton does a great job in capturing the personalities of the Civil War. Make sure you also listen to "The Coming Fury" and "Never Call Retreat" to complete the set. Nelson Runger is my favorite reader for historical works and he does a great job with the entire 60+ hours of material. You can also listen to Shelby Foote's version for another take on this important American event.

Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

Samuel L. Jackson is probably the only actor (possibly besides Eddie Murphy in his early years) who could get away with this. Mr. Jackson has a great voice for narration. I hope to hear his clean stuff. If profanity offends you, this short listen is NOT for you. The F-word is throughout as well as other swear words. This would be recommended for parents who can relate to reading a story at bedtime with a kid who just won't go to sleep.

Mildred Pierce had gorgeous legs, a way with a skillet, and a bone-deep core of toughness and determination. She used those attributes to survive a divorce in 1940s America with two children and to claw her way out of poverty, becoming a successful businesswoman. But Mildred also had two weaknesses: a yen for shiftless men and an unreasoning devotion to her monstrous daughter.

My problem with the book was that I saw the film first and loved it. I was hoping the film was true to the book, but it was not. The basics are the same, but the major differences make the book experience somewhat different and a little lacking for me. I did enjoy some of the characters, although Mildred seemed to come across as more naive than ruthless. Normally I don't listen to female narrators, but this one was okay. She played a better Veda than Mildred, breathing more life and evil into that soulless child. Overall, the book did not emotionally grab me as the film did.

The final work in this series begins in December of 1862. Four months before, the Union Army tasted long-awaited victory at the bloody battle of Antietam. Grant continued on towards Vicksburg, Mississippi. The grim battles that lay ahead would be costly: the Vicksburg campaign, Chattanooga, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Atlanta and the March to the Sea, the siege of Petersburg. There would be two and a half more years of war before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

Nelson Runger is my favorite reader, and I have been waiting so long for Audible to get this series. I wonder why they received permission to publish the third volume in the series but I hope soon they will get the other two: The Coming Fury and Terrible Swift Sword.

The series begins with the final days of Buchanan's administration and events leading up to the war, and the weeks after Lincoln's assassination. No one book can cover every political event and battle but this gives the reader a good sense of the history of that era. Also, listen to Shelby Foote's Civil War and watch the Ken Burns PBS series.
