When you're the best at what you do, it's not always easy to walk away. Nathan McBride was retired. The trained Marine sniper and cover CIA operative had put the violence of his former life behind him. But not anymore. A deep-cover FBI agent has disappeared along with one ton of powerful Semtex explosive, enough to unleash a disaster of international proportions. The U.S. government has no choice but to coax Nathan out of retirement.

Would you consider the audio edition of First to Kill to be better than the print version?

I've not read the printed version so it would not be good to give an opinion here.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The story moves right along in most places and was easy to keep up with. This book won't be a classic over the years, but it is enjoyable to read.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

He did a great job of reading. His voice inflections for the different characters make listening and keeping up with the story very easy. I especially enjoyed his feminine voices--they always brought a smile no matter what was being said.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book had its "one liners" which always lightened the tone.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Where does One Second After rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the most memorable! The author's technical knowledge, understanding of human nature, and foresight all came together in a truly believable story, although the subject is one we do not like to think about. The idea that our comfortable lifestyle can be so totally wrecked so easily is not an idea that is appealing--just the opposite; we want to deny that anything can cause the USA to collapse. This book should be compulsory reading by all civic leaders, and highly recommended for everyone.

What was one of the most memorable moments of One Second After?

There were 2: John's speech before executing the drug thieves who stole the drugs from the nursing home, and John's actions upon winning the battle with The Posse.

What about Joe Barrett’s performance did you like?

Joe did an excellent job of giving distinctive voices to the book's different characters; it really helps when several people are involved in a single conversation. In addition, his rendition of a NC brogue while in the voice of a specific character is to be admired.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Again, there were several and hard to pick just one: when the dogs were killed for food; the dedication of key townfolks and their sacrafices.

    Any additional comments?

I did a lot of crying in this book; it is truly gut-wrenching. I'd like to think that there are many who may live in such a catastrophic situation as this book describes will be able to come forward for leadership. My gut tells me though our current leaders will NOT be among them.

If you could sum up Kill Decision in three words, what would they be?

    thought-provoking, action-packed, and entertaining

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kill Decision?

Early in the book was a surprise twist that laid the framework for the entire book. I don't want to give away anything to a potential reader, but it occurred on the Standford Univ campus.

What about Jeff Gurner’s performance did you like?

He did a terrific job of narrating: easy to keep up with the different characters in their conversations.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I would not make a film of this book.

    Any additional comments?

Great read, but the author left too many loose strings for my taste: characters introduced and played a role but then left without mention; lead players in one spot only to appear later in another locale without any explanation; characters introduced without a definition of their importance to the plot. This is a very entertaining book, and I enjoyed the political discussions that took place, even though they got a little nerdy in places when hi tech lingo was used.

When British and American intelligence catch wind of a major Al Qaeda operation in the works, they instantly galvanize, but to do what? They know nothing about it: the what, where, or when. They have no sources in Al Qaeda, and it's impossible to plant someone. Or is it?

Would you consider the audio edition of The Afghan to be better than the print version?

Cannot answer this as I've not read the book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The story/characters is fiction but very applicable to today's Middle East relationships and wound around a plot that reveals significant research. The history/environment of the plot is factual. The complexities and characters are interwoven in such a way to be entertaining without being tedious.

What about Robert Powell’s performance did you like?

His vocal characterizations made listening so much easier to follow the plot. Great job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The most moving portion was the ending; fast moving, unanticipated, and tradition made informative.

    Any additional comments?

Highly recommend to anyone interested in international relations, or Middle East history, or international intelligence.
