In the fourth of the ‘Palliser’ stories, Trollope follows Phineas Finn’s return to the dangerous world of Westminster politics. When his political rival is murdered, Phineas is thrown under suspicion and eventually finds himself standing trial at the Old Bailey. The situation is complicated by the presence of two women in his life: his old flame Lady Laura, whose estranged husband is determined to destroy Phineas’s reputation, and the wealthy and enigmatic widow, Madame Max.

What did you love best about Phineas Redux?

Returning to old friends- Lady Glen, Madam Max, Lady Laura, Planty Pal and of course Finn. Building on the rich tapestry of their lives already built, this book is perfect for those who want to return to being a fly on the wall in parliament and social scene of London in 1860/70.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Phineas Redux?

Phineas and Madam Max meeting at the Harrington Hall for the first time since their last meeting in 'Phineas Finn'.

Have you listened to any of Timothy West’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Timothy West is amazing as ever, adding so much with his amazing character voices and narrator boom.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Elections, Murder, and Marriage.

    Any additional comments?

The recording is frustrating in parts as someone is paying it back, and it's caught by the mic- so there is a faint echo-delay in the background, and the mobile transmission interference (you know it when you hear it!) is recorded several times.

In the early 1960s, Anne Watts was a newly qualified nurse, eager to use her skills and with an adventurous spirit. At the first opportunity she set sail for Canada, to work in the remote stations in the frozen north of the country. She found a placement easily, one of only a couple of women to work among the indigenous peoples, who were then called Eskimos. Anne later headed for Alice Springs in the Australian outback.

What made the experience of listening to A Nurse Abroad the most enjoyable?

Anne Watts personable and friendly way really takes you along for the ride on her adventures around the world. It makes one excited about the future yet sad in recognition the world has changed not always for the better.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Nurse Abroad?

Anne sleeping under the stars in the outback, drinking tea in Alaska and chai in Nepal.

Have you listened to any of Nerys Hughes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nerys does a wonderful job reading this autobiography. I'm very pleased to see she is narrating Anne Watt's over book (which I have just purchased). Nerys Hughes brings a warmth and life in supporting the text.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very much so! I think I always walked the long way home and spent more time cleaning the house just to have an excuse to keep listening longer!

    Any additional comments?

Anyone interested in nursing, travel, history, autobiographies- or just general curiousity in life- I highly recommend this book! As a student nurse, I am inspired and am excited to have my own rural and global adventures!

Well hello to you dear audiobook browser. Now I have your attention it would be rude if I didn't tell you a little about my literary feast. So, here is the thing: is it just me or does anyone else find that adulthood offers no refuge from the unexpected horrors, peculiar lack of physical coordination and sometimes unexplained nudity, that accompanied childhood and adolescence? I am proud to say I have a wealth of awkward experiences - from school days to life as an office temp - and here I offer my 18-year-old self (and I hope you, too, dear listener) some much needed caution and guidance on how to navigate life's rocky path.

At last in audio - Dom Joly's no holds barred autobiography of a man with the ego of Napoleon and the talent of Darren Day with a brand new exclusive introduction. Dom Joly reveals how he murdered his Armenian nanny before his second birthday, how as a student he inadvertently gave Kurt Cobain the inspiration for 'Smells like Teen Spirit', how as a producer for ITN he mistook John Major for a large lizard.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

As an autobiography, it is hard to tell what is wild fiction from the fact. There are bits that are laugh-out-loud funny, but I felt it turned vexing and turned readers off the main character by the end.

What could Dom Joly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It felt rushed at the end, it skipped large sections of time, brushed over developments so you started to feel disconnected from the subject. Felt quite 'quick quick, high and mighty' in the end which, if it were meant to in an amusing way, failed to set the scene enough to let the readers in on joke. Instead, alienated and quiet turned me off wanting to support any further work.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Dom Joly?

I was excited to see so many audio books available but after listening to this one, my opinion so lowered, no, I will no pay to listen to another and dont think I will look at his work in the same light again.

What about Timothy West’s performance did you like?

Timothy West was fantastic as always. His performance is superb in bringing Trollope's characters to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I found it less gripping than other Trollope novels as the characters were so thoroughly dislikable. I had no compassion for them. BUT having said that, it is a good story overall

  • Can You Forgive Her?

Trollope inextricably binds together the issues of parliamentary election and marriage, of politics and privacy. The values and aspirations of the governing stratum of Victorian society are ruthlessly examined and none remains unscathed. But it is above all on the predicament of women that Trollope focuses. ‘What should a woman do with her life?’ asks Alice Vavasor of herself, and this theme is echoed by every other woman in the novel.

What made the experience of listening to Can You Forgive Her? the most enjoyable?

Like most of his books, Trollope has a wonderful way of talking aside to the reader as if he were narrating just for us- not just being an observer to the story.

Have you listened to any of Timothy West’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Great performance once again by Timothy West- I love how he adds to the characters with voices.

    Any additional comments?

The frustrating part of this book is the space between chapters- can vary between 1 and 10seconds... the latter making you question if the recording has been accidentally paused.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

His wit, his extradinary use of the english language is delicious, and he paints a picture that is wonderful. Particularly so if you are familiar with time, location and people

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stephen is so wonderfully candid about all his insecurities and self doubts- he had me laughing at myself for illustrating my similar thoughts

Have you listened to any of Stephen Fry’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

not yet, but very much intend to!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When he was recounting his time as school teacher who had threatened punishment to a student, and when push came to shove- he had to show he had the beans.

    Any additional comments?

Very entertaining and honest- I cant wait for him to continue with the next chronicle!

    Good Day Sir!

What other book might you compare The Last Chronicle of Barset to and why?

Pride and Prejudice- unrequited love, social standings, gatherings, frocks, marriage and flirtation that is all so innocent but terribly enthralling.

Best part- he does the voices superbly. Tone, pace and pronunciation- complements Anthony Trollopes writing style perfectly
