Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband's past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant. Can Alexia determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria?

What made the experience of listening to Heartless the most enjoyable?

I love the accents, it brings the story to life beautifully. The expressions of emotions capture Gail Carriger's intentions beautifully

What did you like best about this story?

This series has the most entertaining and unexpected twists I have experienced in a long time. Gail has taken well researched and understood fantastical creatures - vampires, werewolves etc. and cast them in a new light. Its a fabulous adventure story with a strong female lead which I adore! Every time I read or listen to it again I discover a new dimension

What does Emily Gray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The life of the characters is brought out, you feel you are sitting there watching the going-ons of the different people, it is a delight to listen to each character being expressed with such care as to reflect the intentions of the author

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed ...a lot! I was highly entertained from start to finish and only hope to encounter situations in which I can use some of the beautifully crafted lines.

The Hypnotist's Love Story is about the mild craziness that lurks behind the facades we present to the world, especially when it comes to love. Ellen O'Farrell is an expert when it comes to human frailties. She's a hypnotherapist who helps her clients deal with everything from addictions to life-long phobias. So when she falls in love with a man who is being stalked by his ex-girlfriend she's more intrigued than frightened.

What made the experience of listening to The Hypnotist's Love Story the most enjoyable?

The character development is exquisite and I came to love all the main characters even the "bad" ones. Such a balanced view on each drew me into each twist and turn and finding myself with divided loyalty.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved both leading ladies actually, but it think the hypnotherapist wins out.

What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Caroline Lee allows one to savour the beautiful, lyrical nature of the writing and fully absorb the characters without rushing to keep up with the action.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending was realistic and yet serendipitous, love those endings.

Would you try another book from Robert Galbraith and/or Robert Glenister?

I wouldn't try another in this mystery series. Will I keep trying J.K. Rowling in the hope of another Harry Potter, definitely

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The ending. The book built beautifully, lots of intrigue and wondering but the end answer just didn't live up to it. It seemed somehow illogical to me.

What does Robert Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did do brilliant accents and voices, you knew character from character. The swearing is more intrusive in an audible book though and there is A LOT of swearing.

    Any additional comments?

The explicit language really tainted my view of this book. I was forgiving it until the end of the story was so unsatisfactory. The writing is eloquent and it's a swift and absorbing read though.

What did you love best about Changeless?

I love Gail because she writes what we think in a fun, flirtatious manner that makes one want to live in the world in which the characters do just to be able to say and do what they do.

What did you like best about this story?

The mystery is delicious and the development of the world which had been created in book 1 is both absorbing and outlandish! The new characters are great too!

    Which scene was your favorite?

Tricky without giving out an spoilers, needless to say nearer the end featuring the main characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Mystery in the North, the new Lady Maccon investigates!

  • The Gentry: Stories of the English

Prize-winning author Adam Nicolson tells the story he was born to write – the real story of England. It is the gentry that has made England what it was and, to a degree, still is. In this vivid, lively book, history has never been more readable. We may well be ‘a nation of shopkeepers’, but for generations England was a country dominated by its middling families, rooted on their land, in their locality, with a healthy interest in turning a profit from their property and a deep distrust of the centralised state. The virtues we may all believe to be part of the English culture each has their source in gentry....

Where does The Gentry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It sits in the middle, it was a highly informative and complicated read. However, the narrator has a voice that could lull one to sleep which made concentrating rather tricky. Multigenerational story lines meant keeping track of characters and relating to them hard work

Where does Her Royal Spyness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Toward the bottom, whilst being lighthearted, the mystery was solved by luck rather than intelligence.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The reader is a great one, the story was just a bit weaker than I hoped

Where does Soulless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    One of my absolute favourite!

What other book might you compare Soulless to and why?

Very few books are as quirky and different as this one. The adventures of Amelia Peabody are in a similar style but without the fantasy.

What about Emily Gray’s performance did you like?

Emily Gray does a great job of creating unique voices for the characters so when listening its so much easier and interesting... I particularly love Conall's voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Most of the book moved me to laughter, fantastic humour!

Read it, read the rest of the series, read all books by Gail Carriger
