This favorite book for children, based on the author's own youthful experiences, describes the family life of the Marches in a small New England community. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy are raised in genteel poverty by their loving mother, Marmee, while their father serves as a chaplain during the Civil War. The story explores their domestic adventures, their attempts to increase the family's income, their friendship with the neighboring Laurence family, and their later love affairs and destinies as women.

I read this as a child and enjoyed it then, but now find I have a new appreciation for it as an adult and enjoyed it even more. The reader did an excellent job and I found myself laughing and crying throughout.

How do you make sure a crime that hasn’t happened yet, never does? That’s the critical question facing Odd Thomas, the young man with a unique ability to commune with restless spirits and help them find justice and peace. But this time, it’s the living who desperately need Odd on their side. Three helpless innocents will be brutally executed unless Odd can intervene in time. Who the potential victims are and where they can be found remain a mystery. The only thing Odd knows for sure is who the killer will be: the homicidal stranger who tried to shoot him dead in a small-town parking lot.

I absolutely love the Odd Thomas series and this was another great installment. The addition of the fast driving, pistol-packin' Mrs. Fischer was a thrill and I hope she makes into future books. She is one of those extra characters that make the book so good. Koontz' ability to make you feel connected to the characters is back in full swing with this book, where he lacked a bit in a few of the others in the series. For fans of the Moonlight Bay (Christopher Snow) series as well, we see more connections in this book and hints that the two stories will interconnect at some point.

Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

I was hesitant to purchase this book, since typically I don't read or listen to vampire/werewolf books much. After reading the reviews and listening to the sample I decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. The story moves quickly and I love the characters. It is refreshing to hear a good book that is not ruined with a lot of vulgarity or profanity. Mercy is a gutsy, quick witted female protagonist that still manages to be down to earth and believable. I love her character and the way Briggs develops the story around her, revealing bits and pieces as needed. The narrator does a great job reading the story and I immediately purchased the next book after finishing the first. I highly recommend giving these books a try

Mechanic Mercy Thompson has friends in low places - and in dark ones. And now she owes one of them a favor. Since she can shapeshift at will, she agrees to act as some extra muscle when her vampire friend Stefan goes to deliver a message to another of his kind. But this new vampire is hardly ordinary - and neither is the demon inside of him.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Absolutely phenomenal narration!! One of the best Audio books I have listened to. This book has been on my 'To Read' pile for almost a year now. When I came upon the audio version and listened to a sample I knew I could wait no longer. Claire Danes brings the book to life. She delivers every emotion so perfectly that you almost feel like your part of it. Several times while listening to this I found that I had stopped moving altogether and was so entranced by the story I hadn't noticed. I could have gone on listening for days!
There are so many layers to this book but it feels so simple at the same time. When Offred is remembering her past and its so much like life today its easy to see how life could be when she transitions her story to her present life. Its easy to see how this could happen just by watching the news. Of all the dystopian books I have to say this one hit home. Considering it was written in the 80's and rings true to all our fears today is astonishing. It wasn't a fight to the death for survival like so many newer books are, but begs the question. What do you do when everyone you love is already gone, and you have no idea who to trust? Who do you ask if they're still alive? And more so, with the atrocities you have heard of or witnessed, do you even want to know. Or would it be better just to believe them safe. To believe them dead. I can't even imagine, yet after hearing this book you have to wonder... what if?

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

What made the experience of listening to The Graveyard Book the most enjoyable?

    The reader was fantastic.

What other book might you compare The Graveyard Book to and why?

It is a book I immediately wanted to listen to again- and run out and tell everyone else to listen to as well. The only other books I have loved this much are The Help and Odd Thomas- mainly just because the readers make the story. Books I loved to read, but loved to listen to even more.

What does Neil Gaiman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the characters to life with perfect nuance to reflect each character, feeling and emotion

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several moments really. I laughed at times and had tears in my eyes at others but was completely engrossed throughout! I love the relationship between Bod and Silus especially.
